See...really? You don't honestly look at this and think it's a) a bit of a gooseberry fool drawing and b) a wank interpretation of a female hero? I really love comics, but this gooseberry fool embarrasses me.

Oh and by the way, I'm not even against T&A in comics, if done in the right way. Empowered, a comic originally drawn for people into images of tied up females, is a great read. But it doesn't pretend to be for children and it pokes fun at what it is.

I also think there is an issue with how the New 52 has portrayed woman. Lets not forget the Catwoman strawberry floats Batman on a roof top (in a comic not labelled mature), or Catwoman's tits & arse pose (cause it's always been frustrating only seeing one from the front) or Starfire is now an alien who needs sex, for some reason. Honestly this gooseberry fool is embarrassing.

Googled what the issue was about the cover as I was obviously missing the point. I didn't even know what TT was, so her supposed to being a teenager is a bit creepy in that context. But do people really expect superheroes to look like normal people? My favourite hero is Spiderman and he has the body of a UFC fighter and genius level intellect but with 'regular guy' problems. No one ever slates the fact every male superhero(with powers) is ripped to strawberry float. But I get that TT is aimed at teenagers so, yay, uproar.

Wtf is that image from?Horrendous. Never seem to come across stuff like this, massive X Men tits is as ridiculous as my reading gets.

The issue isn't that superheroes are unrealistic, simply that depiction of woman can often lean on them looking sexy, rather then them being smart/powerful/resourceful/whatever. I was being flippant about the cock bulges, but it is true, that if you were to look at a month of Marvel or DC comics, (at the time of writing I'd suggest that DC are worst culprits and Marvel have gone a long way to change the artists they hire after the success of Hawkeye), there are a staggering number of ridiculous depictions of woman. I'm not speaking about them looking "sexy" or any other such idea, simply terrible drawings/physics, even of the world in which they are set in.

That image is a picture from Red Hood & The Outlaws, one of the new 52 first wave comics. NB: The text isn't that which is seen in the issue.

Another example, Amanda Waller, one of my favourite female characters. A woman so capable, she can stand up to Batman herself, lead the Suicide Squad, manipulate the Secret Six and in the DCU run all of Cadmus Industries and manipulate the US government. Pretty cool character, no? Someone whose merits more then make her interesting.

Except, she too needed a New 52 redesign:

Oh look, another generic house style body shape.

What made this case of a shitty cover so much more noteworthy than the past cases of sexualisation, which have often been much worse?

The writer who complained about that cover in a CBR article got rape threats which led to them deleting all the CBR forums.

Yeah I think this is the main reason why this story has blown up the way it has. And it's strawberry floating disgusting behaviour that almost makes me ashamed to like comics. It's a horrible side of comics that I don't like at all.

It's only small but all the staff are top draw and there's a great selection of books including indies.

Is that the arcade opposite The Core? I'll be sure to check it out.

Been absolutely ages since I got any comics and really want to get back in somewhere. Any recommendations of some good collections out at the moment? Been any decent Iron Man stuff lately?

Last stuff I really got was Secret Invasion I think :fp:

Both Matt Fraction's Invincible Iron Man and Kieron Gillen's current Iron Man run are quality. On Gillen's run the issues with Greg Land on art aren't great art wise cus he's a copy and paste hack, but he's only on it till about issue 10 IIRC. It's on like issue 25 now and it's absolutely quality if you like iron man.

Have you also read Extremis by Warren Ellis?

What's it about exactly? Saw a lot of people praising it on GAF.

Similar in tone as Justified the tv series, a gentleman returns to his family home and finds the home town isn't the one he left as a child. Again it has a similar opening on some ways to Scalped and Latour's Loose Ends. Nothing in it is particularly new, but the tone, art and the characters already developed make it feel it'll be great.

NB: I was a huge Scalped mark, so something that harks back to that, is an easy sell to me.

I've read Vol. 1 of Lazarus, Saga and East of West now.

Surprisingly, I think Saga is the worst by quite some distance. I really like East of West, though. It's essentially The Saint of Killers Comic, and that's fine by me. Will probably buy volume 2.

Also, Comixology are giving out $5 vouchers if you upgrade to their new and worse app.

I still don't get the Saga love either. It's good, but I don't think it's anywhere near as good as it was made out to be. It's written far too smugly as well.

Here's an interview with Bendis lying through his teeth http://marvel.com/news/comics/2014/5/5/ ... the_galaxy

I'm sure the Annihilation omnibus was supposed to be out tomorrow but I've doublechecked and apparently it's May 20th now. :(

I swear I read in the blurb for that new star lord solo series by humphries that that is the book dealing with what happened in the cancerverse to star lord :?

If this is anything like the last issue of GotG that was going to explain what happened, that book is getting dropped from my pull list quicker than bendis can kill the next character he created and doesn't want to share with other writers.

Until now I honestly thought the cancerverse was some slang term for everything that happens within Bendis' writing :fp:

Nail on the head, there. It's incredibly smug.

Lazarus is one massive cliche from what I've read so far. I've bought all the East of West comics now and I really like it, but it's very derivative. It's heavily influenced by Preacher and a few aspects of Sandman, but a lot more to the point.

Read a bit of Fatale and not too keen.

On the whole, I'm not overly impressed by Image Comics. I notice that pretty much every thing I've looked up by them has won this award and that award (and always has a quote from IGN), which just sort of confirms my view that comics in general aren't of a super high quality and when anything half decent comes along it wins awards.

It's better than your standard idiotic superhero guff but only by virtue of it being in original universes. It all sort of gives of this vibe that they're super pleased with themselves and how quirky they are, too.

Just reached issue 25 of Batwoman, with the new creative team.

What the hell is this gooseberry fool? One of the coolest LGBT characters in comics ruined.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

So FCBD issues:

Future's End #0. Yeah pretty good, basically a part of the series. How essential? Duno until I read #1. But I am cautiously optimistic about this weekly series.

GotG & Rocket Racoon marvel stuff - eurgh. Racoon was shite, not even by the creative team for his solo series. Shock horror desperate "cash in" on the GotG movie. The other marvel FCBD issue containing GotG was better, but if you don't like Bendis on this book then you won't like it (bendis labelling them as "space avengers" just about sums up how he/marvel views this book now). Part "cash in" to explain who the GotG are for the movie, part fill in issue for the main series. Spider-Verse section was throwaway as well.

More Theories About Nick Fury In Original Sin

Just as Marvel were trying to find a role for Hal Jordan whilke he was replaced with a younger model, so Marvel are trying to find a role for Nick Fury Sr now that his son is running around SHIELD and looking a lot more like Samuel Jackson.

Could this somehow be a replacement role? As the new Watcher, taking the place of Uatu on the moon? The only man trusted to keep the world’s secrets? With his one good eye?

Is that the issue where the new writer took over and the previous storyline wasn't resolved at all or something like that? I remember there being a lot of anger over that issue.
