I think our generation will be hit hard by this, and our kids will be as frustrated with us for falling for it as we are with our parents for sharing obviously bollocks Facebook posts. But those kids will be more savvy, at least until they're around 35 & something is invented that they don't quite understand & the cycle continues.

Yeah I'm not sure how well we can adapt to something like this if it becomes sufficiently sophisticated. When the lies are as authentic looking as the truth will we have enough supporting mechanisms to show them for what they really are? And more importantly will individuals have the compulsion to actually put the lies to the test?

Fortunately we will always have the experts on hand who can tell from the pixels whether something is fake.

What if someone develops some kind of authentication system for video content which allows people to see when and where it was originally filmed, then influential figures could arrange a specific location in which all official statements are filmed and any video that doesn't include the authentication data is therefore deemed fake.

The problem is more that we won't be able to tell if leaked non-professional footage is faked rather than the stuff that's said in an official capacity. Although I guess it would be possible who officials to edit their speeches and declare that any thing that is released that makes them look stupid as fake.

Hopefully there will be a tool that can easily tell if something has been faked. That way it can be built into facebook so the user will be able to tell before they watch whether information has been changed.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

That's ok in theory, but it'll be too late once it is on Facebook/Twitter and 10 million people watch it within an hour.

An authentication system might be enough to stop somebody going to jail, but it is not going to help in the context of democracy or embarrassment.

Just look at how everyone still believes David Cameron strawberry floated a dead pigs mouth. The only evidence for that is one person that had a grudge against Cameron and who wrote about it in a book but (probably because it is funny) it's too late for Cameron, he will go down in history as a pig strawberry floater.

Part of the problem is that in the US news has been downgraded to the point where it's seen as opinion by many so simply reporting what happens is seen as you putting a spin on it and if it isn't the spin they want then they just discount it.
It's why when CNN simply covers a Trump event and don't even have any commentary they can be called fake news when they simply recap what just happened.

It's also why they see news coverage from other countries as biased as even if they are just reporting what happened because they aren't doing what Fox news does and looking to sensationalise everything as part of some deep state conspiracy theory.

I know this is a joke, but this is a problem as well because then you need to have sufficient trust in whoever is verifying a video is real. If something gets leaked showing some high level government official committing a crime, would you trust someone from the same government when they tell you the video is fake?

Regarding trusted news sources, that's another issue as many news sources just piggy back on articles from other outlets. Once it gets reported by the Associated Press, or Reuters it gets posted by other news agencies.

We will end up in some kind of Jayden Smith-esq future where we wonder how are eyes can realize real lies. :|

I was thinking about this and it would be a rather cool sci-fi concept to write a story about. Imagine a point in the future were video and photographic evidence can be so easily faked that the courts consider it as no better than hearsay as any idiot can tell an AI to fake whatever they want in an hour or so. It would be a pretty interesting environment to set a crime drama or something.
