Commodore netbook

The famous Commodore brand is to be attached to the lid of a Small, Cheap Computer.

The UMMD 8010/F will be based on VIA's C7-M processor rather than an Intel Atom, but its other specs are classic SCC.

The unit will have a 10in screen, 1GB of memory and an 80GB hard drive. There's a memory card slot, an Ethernet port and several USB connectors.

Add to that a 1.3-megapixel webcam, 802.11b/g Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and you have a machine sounding a lot like MSI's Wind - minus the Atom CPU, of course.

As you can see from the snap taken by Norwegian website NRK Beta, the netbook has something of the original C64 about it. According to a Pocket-Lint report, it'll cost a decidedly C64-beating £325 when it goes on sale in October.

There'll be no Linux option, apparently, only Windows XP.

From pure Nostalgia alone that looks great. I love Commodore. Incidently my mum is looking for a computer and she has no knowledge on anything fancy, it may just be the cheap starter computer she needs for her digital photos etc. The sooner i teach her about computers, the sooner she will stop hassling me to do it for her!

The Netbook market has already been flooded and thats even before Dell launch their low cost Lattitude. What does this bring to the market apart from the Commodore name?

Not a lot. But the styling is nice in a very retro way and I'm sure the price-point is attractive enough to nab a few sales for the nostalgics amongst us...

The price point is awful. It was to be at the 200 pound mark occupied by ASUS's EEE.

Some people may not get emulators and game ROMS because it's illegal but please spare a thought for those who are just too lazy to find all that stuff on the internet.

I've been wanting one of these mini laptops for around 6 months; I'm glad I waited. The price drops have been unreal.

Don't know whether to pick up the 120GB harddrive Acer One for £230 or the 8GB Solid state for £200. It isn't the price, but a harddrive sort of defeats the point of what I want it for (speed).

Looks gooseberry fool, I use to love the commodore 64 back in the day, but this brings up no nostalgic reference to me.

This would have been a lot more interesting if EEE users hadn't already managed to crowbar Amiga Forever onto their mini-laptop.
