Isn't this the survival game where you start completely naked?

Or was that some weird modded version I happened to see

I believe that you do; apparently you can set "body part" sizes as part of the create-a-character stage, too. I suspect this is offered just to grab a bit of attention for the game.

Not awful, just completely average.

I don't use Metacritic as the sole factor when looking to buy a game. Sure, it gives a useful overall view of the general quality of the game, but not much about whether I will enjoy it or not. For example, God of War has been handed numerous accolades but the game setup and play just doesn't appeal to me. I read reviews, look at vids, and think about the style of gameplay. I can forgive graphics and bugs if I enjoy the style of game.

Exiles is far from awful. Then again I prefer to play the games I want to play, not what Metacritic tells me to play. ;)

Fair enough, but a lot of people like me have busy lives, we don't have time to play several games a week/month and we can't try every game either, so review scores are the only way to judge overall.

This is basically why I have to be very selective when it comes down to what I buy.

Nick have you ever liked a game that didn't score highly in Metacritic?

This. If I paid much attention to video game "journalists" I would not have enjoyed as many games as I do. For example, OneChanBara Z2 Chaos 57%, Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair 64 ‰ respectively on Metacritic and yet two of my favourite games.

If your game buying decisions are purely based on Metacritic then you're doing yourself a disservice. Not only that, but it also shows a level of 'gaming snobbery' which is a pet hate of mine.

Anyway, dragging things back on topic.

Jawa, get that first shelter built quick as sandstorms are killers.

I really don't think that I have, I've been gaming since the NES days and back then it was mainly due to whether my friends recommended it or I liked the look of the box (:fp:), then around 1993 I started reading magazines and looking at reviews and it's probably helped me avoid getting some right stinkers for my birthday/xmas.

There have been a few games that have reviewed well that I didn't really enjoy, browsing through the first 3 pages of http://www.gamerankings.com/browse.html the only games/series I've played and didn't really like have been Elders Scrolls, Fallout, COD, Minecraft and Zelda, I can see why they're rated highly but they just weren't for me.

Well yeah there's lots of games that score highly on metacritic that I didn't like, I tend to take that site with a pinch of salt.

Nick, not everything is a console war...

You admitted you don't like game that scored well on Metacritic... it's tiring this gooseberry fool.

Guys, this chat is probably now in danger of veering away from the topic. From this point, let's keep the discussion about Conan Exiles here.

Okay - when I start off I'll work out what materials I need to build one.

I don't want to put any spoilers in here, but with your first shelter, (and after you've gained a couple of levels), head north away from the river and to a more rocky area where hyenas and deer roam. It's also away from other humans who can be tough in numbers. You can deal with said humans later.

First I've heard or seen of this game, but I'm a mega fan of the original Conan film and will purchase this blindly on the assumption that it's a tie-in for the 1982 movie, and that Arnie has done the voice acting and also James Earl Jones as Thulsa Doom. I'm also assuming that if I buy the digital deluxe copy that Crom will bless my steel and allow me to enter Valhalla. Physical copy-buyers will be cast out of Valhalla and made to work the Wheel of Pain until they die.

Can't wait

Okay... I've started the game!

Had a few problems at first; I tried the Online option but couldn't join a server. It seems that people set up their own servers and most of them are password protected. I tried joiing two that weren't but with no luck.

Anyway - then I realised that the best way to start is probably through single / co-op option. You get an opening cinematic and then you create your character. Yes, you can set endowment / breast size and the animations are ridiculous :fp:  .

Starting the adventure, it's a little unusual as you are - literally - stark bollock naked. It's intriguing as you don't really get any guidance at all; you are dumped in a wasteland and it's up to you to clothe, arm and feed yourself. You have to work out the controls and commands and this makes a change from usual.

Forty minutes or so in and I like it. It seems that the more you learn about the game, the more your options open up. Oh, and the music is pretty epic.
