It is odd how the DC didn't do better, Garth. The launch timing wasn't bad, really, but I guess the PlayStaion was a relative behemoth.

I've said it before but I'm convinced Sony pulled some strings with big retailers to get them to push the PS2 and undersell the Dreamcast.

My local GAME had masses of DC stuff on display unil the PS2 was announced then suddenly it was relegated to a single shelf at the back of the shop with the store front occupied by empty placeholder PS2 boxes several weeks before it even went on sale.

Staff were also disuading customers from buying Dreamcsts by making comments like "I'd wait for the Playstation 2 mate!" and such.

Just like the Vita

6 years and still going, great indie platform, great remote playback device, Vita means life :datass:

Yeah, it's made all the better by the continued support Sony and the 3rd parties give it though of course

That happened to me. The Dreamcast was the first console I bought myself, it felt like the staff were trying to ruin the moment :x

Didn't regret buying it one bit 8-)

Yeah it was the same at school

"Seen that new Dreamcast?"

"Yeah, looks amazing"

"Getting one then?"

" Nah, I'm waiting for PlayStation 2"

(PlayStation 2 hadn't even been announced) :fp:

Edit: It still had more street credit at my school than "Sega Shiturn", I was the only person in class who had one.

Whilst the PS2 was an obvious and massive factor in the death of the Dreamcast, Sega made quite a few self-inflicted wounds in the previous 2 console generations that contributed to their downfall. The fiasco of the Saturn's release burned a lot of retailers and developers, and the 32X and Sega CD were both expensive flops that Sega shouldn't have pushed so heavily. The conflict between Sega America and Sega Japan was played out in public, which also didn't help :fp:

Sometimes the brightest lights burn fastest of all. Sega :(

The chart is heavily biased against the 80s. No Atari as well as the home computers being missing (Commodore, Spectrum and Amstrad).

Shame on you Jawa, shame on you.

They are incredible stats.

But how many CDi consoles sold in comparison to PC Engines? Did the Amiga CD32 outsell them both combined?

We need to know Jawa and your fact finding mission has resulted in utter failure.

Both sides got it wrong from what I remember.

Sega or America wanted to extend the life of the Mega Drive longer than Japan with the add-ons then create a 3D powerhouse to rival the Ultra 64.

Sega of Japan wanted to jump to next gen ASAP as the Mega Drive was aging in Japan at that point and weren't too concerned about 3D (despite Virtua Fighter's massive success there).

In the end they compromised once PlayStation specs leaked, but it was too late. To be honest Sega's vision of a 2D powerhouse was successful in Japan but an utter failure in the West.

Dreamcast was kinda the opposite, an affordable, easily programmable, 3D system, which did better in the West than Japan. For most people though Sega's reputation was trash by that point.

I never really thought about it, but I have actually owned every generation of Playstation, that said I think the first one was my favourite of the lot. PS3 being the least. PS4 will probably end up at 2.

The 360 is my favourite console I am happy it did as well as the PS3.

Oh and PS2, GC, and XB was the only generation I had all 3, though I picked up the XB late and 2nd hand

I always find it a little surprising that people don't realise how well the PSP did - relative to the DS it "lost" the generation, but that's only because the DS was a casual monster. The PSP did a fantastic job at carving out a market. The world had moved on when the Vita rolled around, but Sony still threw away a lot of what they gained with the PSP.

Wasn't the SG-1000 out before the Master System?

Interesting stuff Jawa but without including true powerhouses of the home computer market like the Dragon32 this list is essentially trash.

I bet he hasn’t even included Nintendo’s Game and Watch series or the Sega GameGear. :x

If Calvin Harris has got love for it so should everyone else.

Edit: No idea what I was thinking when I wrote the original sentence.

Exactly.

How am I supposed to have an informed discussion on the nature of the modern computer game industry if I can't tell how many more units the Hanimex 7771 sold compared to the Adman Grandstand?!

I remember a lot of demo pods around for the Dreamcast - they had a playable of Ready 2 Rumble boxing. Thought it was a bit odd they put so much focus on that considering it was available everywhere.

I honestly saw more people playing and interested in Rosco McQueen on a demo pod in Argos a few years prior than I ever did a Dreamcast pod.

I have included the GG :toot: .

The Wikipedia stats only include consoles selling at least one million units; and I only included the (former) "big 4" manufacturers. I would've liked to include variant consoles (such as "slim" and "pro" models) but such stats seem hard to come by.

Marvelous effort sir :toot:

Crazy that PS4 is about to outsell PS3 with no signs of slowing down

Yeah I remember Ready 2 Rumble being very heavily promoted at the time, making magazine covers and such. Certainly not an especially well remembered game now
