Console Sales (1983-2017)

Please spend time analysing this chart in order to devise an argument for proving that your favourite manufacturer / console is the best one ever. Or, let me know how my chart is factually incorrect, presented in a way that distorts the truth and shows intolerable bias :toot: .

And I thought I had way too much spare time.

It's interesting and ultra exciting to see Nintendo's very erratic sales performance fully quantified compared to Sony's pretty steady performance. Playing it safe Vs taking a risk basically.

strawberry float, MS have been in the game longer than SEGA ever were. That's like the mammoths/pyramids thing all over again.

Master System was released in 85 in Japan so technically they've been in the same amount of time.

There's always time for teaming-up facts with fun, Ironhide :-) .

It is odd how the DC didn't do better, Garth. The launch timing wasn't bad, really, but I guess the PlayStaion was a relative behemoth.

:o ... thanks, Sandy - charts really can be fun and drive conversation!

I was kinda surprised by that as well, Taf.

A few other questions spring up from looking at the chart. Was it a mistake for Nintendo to launch the GC and GBA in the same year? Was the Wii / 360 / PS3 era the peak competitive period? And imagine if Sega had built upon the succes of the MD!

I knew PS4 was outperforming Xbox One - but not at a rate of more than 2-1

Other surprises are the number of PSP and N64 sales which were respectively higher and lower than I'd have expected

Bit of a weird oversight but you appear to have missed Ouya?

Yeah, perception can be a funny thing, fry.

AND the Atari Jaguar wasn't included. The chart has been revealed as a total sham :( .

Any idea where PS3 sales are up to? Xbox 360 was confirmed to be 84m when MS announced it was discontinued last year, but we've not heard anything since 2013 (over 83m) regarding PS3 sales and it's technically still in production.

I see PS4 finishing 120m - 130m, depending on when PS5 launches, don't see anything topping PS2's 155m+.

Sad to see Sega not even managing 10m for the Dreamcast too.

Impressive overall average (86m), almost double what MS average (49m).

You know when you buy a PlayStation it'll sell well and be well supported by Sony and third parties for many years.

Complete opposite with Sega who killed the Dreamcast and Saturn after 3 years. Microsoft couldn't wait to kill the original Xbox either

The DS sales are just insane. How did it end up selling so well? Nintendogs and Brain Training...?!

Casual market. The same people that are now playing mobile phone games.

The drop in sales between the DS and 3DS demonstrate just how hard phones have cut into that market.

Yeah, you’re both spot on there I think. Surprising Nintendo took ten years to make any in roads in mobile gaming really after they lost half their market from the DS with the 3DS (which still sold superbly to be fair but still)
