I use daily contacts lenses...just found out I have an astigmatism and now they are way more expensive. So I'm thinking about swapping to monthly...thing is I can't be doing with going to the optician AGAIN so if I were to just order them online would that be OK. Are perscriptions the same for monthly? Would it be safe to do so or is it really worth going to my optician again in case there are further checks involved?

The prescription will be the same but I'd advice going to the opticians as the lenses will be slightly different and they should let you trial them for a few weeks to see if you want to permanently change to them.

Go to the optician. You're certainly not the first astigmatic person to want to swap from dailies to monthly lenses (I did the same thing!) so you should be able to get it switched over quite easily, and they'll make sure you get the right lenses. There should be five numbers in your contact lens prescription. The sphere, cylinder, and axis are to do with correcting the actual refractive error. The other two (I think they're diameter and curve, but I can't remember) are about how the contact lenses fit the front of your eye. Different brands fit in different ways, so you want to discuss with the optician which is the correct brand for you. Whether this fit changes beween daily and monthly lens types I'm not sure. If you've only just had a contact lens/eye check up then they'll hopefully not need to do anything again and you can just ask them to change your lens on the account (are you on a contact lens scheme?). As Mafro says though, they will probably insist on you having a trial, and you'll need to learn how to wash them properly (which you won't have needed to do with daiies).

I did the same to save money but I don't have astigmatism. You need a new prescription every time you want to change lenses i.e. weekly, dailies, monthlies, BRAND.

You can't order any lens online. You can only order the exact lens type including brand name etc that is stated on your prescription. The online optician will have to verify your prescription with your optician first.
This is in the UK as far as I'm concerned. I know there are some retailers that just make you tick a box but thats not very professional.

No1 FFF is right. For obvious reasons, they don't hand out 'self medicated' contacts. The wrong lenses can seriously damage your eyes.

Just got to the opticians. A contact lense consultation is around a tenner.

I'll never understand how people can wear contacts. Just the thought of putting something in my eye like that freaks me out :dread:

I'll stick with my glasses thanks.

Alright 4 eyes. All the cool kids know that contacts are the way to go.

Must admit I am getting a bit tired of Specsavers now....I may try out vision express? Or would you reccommend any other opticians. Which one is the cheapest?

I move around a lot and the fact Specsavers don't communicate between stores is just retarded.

They do if you ask them to pull the records. They're also cheapest for glasses. Tests are much of a much - sight test is normally free/nominal amount and contact lens check on top of that 10 to 20 quid. Get your prescription, leave and buy online.

i can recommend vision express. they're a little bit pricy but you get free appointments, free replacements (which you could really exploit but i havent) and they move your info around store to store.

Don't do monthlies, they suck.

In what way? I've had monthlies for around 8 years since I started wearing contacts and they are perfectly fine. A hell of a lot cheaper than daily ones too.

I just find dailys so much more conveniant. Monthlies are a lot of hassle if you lose/rip them early and I always found they got note irritating as the month went. Plus not having to clean them each night is one less thing to worry about.

I think my dailys are £6 more a month which I'm happy to pay for the extra conveniance. I haven't looked back since changing.

The one time I ripped mine I got a replacement within three days. I looked in to getting the specific type of astigmatism daily ones but it was around £120 for 90 days worth vs £18 per month in paying just now. strawberry float that.

Yeah, £120 is a tad ridiculous.

My dailys are £22 for 30. I'd probably do monthlies if they were £40 though.

One thing I'm worried about is I used to occasionally lose the daily behind my eye...now i think this may be due to me having an astigmatism and not wearing lenses specified to that at the time....if I lost a monthly behind my eye, that may be quite dangerous as they're thicker?? Either way I'm going back to Specsavers on Thursday and I'll mention that.

I've had them stay there for 24 hours or more before, little strawberry floats.
