Sadly, in many workplace environments people will really viciously take the piss out of you if you wear a mask, especially without a "serious" reason. You could make up a reason but then if the lie is ever exposed you would be even more of an outcast.

If we were clever, people would be masking up in busy places. But we aren't so :simper:

Why does it always come back to being only the UK with these things?

Pretty much the whole world has moved on from regular facemask usage since Covid became a milder disease. The only countries that are still heavily using facemasks are the ones that were culturally predisposed to wearing them in general before hand.

 Me and Ad are crying into our cockles and laverbread right now.

I don't like to think of people as being "just" stupid. I think it's more interesting and helpful to think about why they believe what they do.

There was a big push in the media about how "now it's all over we need to go back to how things were". I think a substantial chunk of people realised from the experience of the pandemic that, actually, wearing a mask is a decent choice in winter just to generally get less ill -- but they were portrayed as childish, moralistic worriers, or even basically monsters who want us to be locked away forever so we can never hug our parents and the kids can never play outside again, and so on.

Not everyone has the critical thinking skills to read all that and realise that it's propaganda from a ruling class who are invested in maintaining city-centre commercial building prices and generating culture wars. Unfortunately, many people will take it at face value -- especially as it wasn't just ridiculous tabloids taking that line, but also "respectable" sources.

That doesn't excuse the bullying behaviour when it arises of course, it's totally unacceptable. But the propagandists and bullies have largely won, it's quite difficult to bear the social consequences of wearing a mask. I only mask up on long train journeys these days and even then it's a bit embarrassing getting so many weird looks.

Are you planning to wear a mask for the rest of your life? Or once you inevitably get Covid, you reckon you'll lose the motivation to keep wearing a mask?

It'll take a significant event to get people mask wearing in any meaningful numbers, just seeing some random guy isn't going to alter that: "No one cared who I was until I put on the mask."

Covid isn't the reason I'm wearing a mask. I'm wearing a mask to to lessen my chance of getting ill in general - and also to stop me giving anything to anyone else. I live on my own, getting ill like I did 3 weeks ago strawberry floating sucks because you have 0 energy to do anything and you somehow have to help yourself and stop yourself and your home from falling into dissarray. I also just honestly feel more comfortable wearing a mask, especially if it's cold outside like it is now it helps keep your face warm.

I found mask wearing didn't make a great deal of difference tbh, i still ended up contracting every bit of rubbish going.

I don't wear them anymore because i hated them, and also the above, but i've no issue with anyone who feels happier doing so.

There was also the problem where i was still using them on the london underground, but when i tried to take one off afterwards, it got caught around my glasses and almost broke them, which in a place like that, would have been an absolute disaster.

I still wear a mask, partially to avoid becoming ill, partially because I don't like my appearance and wearing a mask is a bit of a confidence booster. I don't wear it all the time but it seems* to have helped me avoid getting sick as often as I used to over the past few years. I've probably been ill maybe 2 or 3 times since the start of covid and I'm fairly confident they were from times where I didn't mask up around people so I'd like to think it's had some effect. If not I still like how I look in a mask so will keep it up for the foreseeable future

*I know this isn't scientific and I may just have got lucky

I wear N95 masks in very busy shops and public transport. I get much fewer colds than I used to, why would I stop?

Similar to mass vaccination masks are primarily effective when a critical mass of people choose to use them. The core benefit is to reduce the transmission of airborne infections from the wearer of the mask, not the other way around - if enough people routinely wear them then that means there is a significant drop in the spread of illness from people who may not be aware they are infectious.

There is a level of protection to yourself if you wear one "solo" as it were, and if it makes you feel happier and safer then that's reason enough, but sadly unless we can convince society that general adoption of masks during the winter/flu season is a good idea then there isn't much hope of getting the real wider benefit from them.

So do I. But it's hard not to arrive at the conclusion that many people don't give care about anyone beyond their sphere. And that just stupid.

I think I've gone down with flu today, came on sudden, I have a high temp, and my joints ache like hell.

I had my flu jab ages ago so I'm hopeful that it'll make a difference.

You should have worn a mask.
