I'd really like to make a gaming pc and was wondering if anyone who has done it before knows what it would be like in terms of cost? I hear it's cheaper than buying one right out.

More accurately, you will get much better hardware for the same cash by building it yourself than throwing your cash at a seller of prebuilt PCs.

The exact cost will depend on what you're willing to pay, and what you're willing to sacrifice (and every sane PC build will involve sacrifice, because very few people can afford a money no object build, and the gains are rarely worth the price premium). But as a baseline, I'd estimate £400-500 for a basic Intel build, then whatever you're willing to pay on top of that for your graphics card. There are places you can cheap out on a basic build, though, so it could go lower.

If you are going to need to buy a copy of Windows and/or a monitor remember to factor that in.

A really good build with those two components will probably end up costing you in the region of £800 at least.

You'd recommend putting an AMD (EDIT - or cheap dual core Intel) CPU in any PC priced under £600 then would you?

I'm sure he was just pointing him to a starting point/place to consider components for a build. Maybe you should spec him one up?
