Inspired by episode 1 pod racer arriving on gog, and it looking nothing like I remember, it got me thinking about the 45 min toy advert pod racing scene in the phantom menace. It looks and still mostly looks fantastic, and with the star wars battlefront games looking so authentic, and with games like horizon and god of war looking phenominal, could we get something close if it were released today?

I'm thinking along the lines of this first gif:

I'm betting heavily on yes.

now I want to watch the phantom menace

I'd imagine if they were to put Pod Racing in Star Wars Battlefront it wouldn't look too far from that. They've already managed to make speeder sequences in Battlefront look very close to the movies.

Jesus I really need to play more of that game, I've only played it a handful of times and that bit blew me away, it looks to good. As you say, very close to the film, especially if you downsample it.

It's certainly going to be impressive once we get machines that can do 4K HDR 60fps with all the bells and whistles turned up to 11.
The next gen will make headway but I think the next gen upgrades will show what 4K can really do.
I'd love a next gen game with the ambition of Crysis just to see them being pushed to the limit.

Imagine a new Star Wars game that wasn't just another multiplayer shooter :( What a world that would be.

I had a go on the arcade version. The control setup was cool. You sat in a replica pod and had two thrust levers, one for each engine. So to turn left you had to pull back on the left lever and push forward on the right lever, and to turn right you had to do the opposite.

I was strawberry floating gooseberry fool at it.

Played the sit down version of Pod Racer Arcade in Disney Land. It was awesome.

I'd love to see a new Star Wars Pod Racer. Imagine it in VR.

I've been calling for a current or next gen Pod Racer game for a year or two now and been roundly ignored. I should've made a thread.

Given the number of locales now available from all three trilogies, the standalone films and animated shows, plus the amazing visuals of the current or future next gen Frostbite engines, I'm more convinced than ever that a new Pod Racer would be a generation defining title, GOTY contender and all round strawberry floating amazing experience. And yes, it should have a VR mode.

Criterion to develop, please.

The sound of Sebulba’s pod racer was the best thing about the prequels. I support a next gen pod racing game.

Does the GOG version have joystick support? I can imagine a HOTAS setup would be loads of fun.

I'm thoroughly in favour of a new Star Wars Racer. Firstly it would be awesome, and secondly it may increase the chance of a new X-Wing game. I played Dark Forces recently and wondered what a photorealistic sprite/texture pack would look like. Probably impossible to do but it would be great to see. While we're at it, I'd love to see Star Wars Trilogy Arcade released too.

The arcade version with the twin engine controls is one of the best arcade games I've ever played.

I loved the game on N64 too. Podracing is easily the best thing about the prequels.

I have it on N64 and have played it in the arcade quiet a few times. Wasn't there a PS2 sequel?

Anything that isn't a online mutliplayer shooter has be interested.
Would love another game similar to the Force Unleashed games, yeah they weren't that great but they really made you feel like a jedi

I had the PC version, thought it was fantastic. Really tempted to buy it off GOG TBH. Probably get it at some point.

Played so much of Episode 1 Racer on both the N64 and PC back in the day, would absolutely love a new version with modern graphics. Could be amazing, it's a shame that the futuristic racer genre seems to have died a death because that probably won't help its chances. :(

LGR's latest is about Pod Racer:

I was never all that into it myself (neither in the film or the N64 game) despite being a fan of futuristic racers.

I'd love to see a new version of this, only played the N64 version back in the day. On modern hardware it should look amazing.
