I'm screwed then. My scores are going lower now. Things feel to random for me as well. Sometimes this power up appears. Sometimes its the useless red thing. Sometimes the colourful alien spawns. Sometimes it minor extra points which by the time I've got I might as well have ignored. I like it. I just don't really "get" it.
Hey, that's fine. It may just be the type of game that doesn't totally click with you.
There are 3 kinds of "power up"
1) The colourful alien is not really a power-up, it's more like the special invader that appears every now and again on the original Space Invaders arcade. The music fades and a special sound kicks in when one comes on screen - these give big score bonuses.
2) Pills that are dropped after shoot targets. These appear a brief moment after you shoot a target. There is a design reason for this...if the pill appeared immediately, due to the speed of the game, you'd end up running over it without knowing. So the idea is that we have a brief pause that causes you to have to flip over and pick it up. If your health is low, an energy refill or invincible type is more likely to be dropped.
3) Powerdroids - these are the ones that give you a brief weapon upgrade. There are 3 in the demo, but more in the final game (one that drops a stream of mines, a plasma beam one etc)
