The sandwich is kinda disappointing when feeling greedy, it's just too much stodge in one mouthful, plus danger of that weird burning sensation from the baking soda. It's better having the dollop of cream (yes on top) hit the roof of your mouth so you get the richness sensation to swill around. Otherwise bit of a peanut butter situation.

I have creme Freche as a poor man's option sometimes, healthier anyway (crying inside), so gratuitously satisfying but pretty effective at making me pass out.

Clotted cream is the gooseberry fool, shame it's so expensive.

You can't put them back together that's just mental!

You slice them in half and have bloody great heap of jam and cream on each. I think I may have to add scwuns, Jam and Clotted Cream to my shopping list....

Putting the scwun back together, strawberry float sake :fp:

You want one of those mutant sized scwuns, almost as big as a fist, cut in half with loads of jam then a huge poon full of clotted cream on top :datass:

You only tend to get that with shop bought scwuns, homemade ones are far nicer.

^This. And it has to be full-fat butter and full fat clotted cream (Cornish or Devon) and full-sugar strawberry jam. As a Devon boy, born and raised in the Shire, I know about this stuff. I'm off down to Cornwall next weekend to stay with some old friends. I miss Devon and Cornwall so much. :(

Come to think of it, since I switched to gluten free stuff (including home bake) I've never had that. It's not necessary in a scwun afaik. Baking soda is a horrible ingredient. I remember ages ago my mum put way too much in some buckwheat bread and it was unbearable.

Let's just say that some of us are right and some of us are wrong.....

Whichever way you do it, it still comes out the same.

Variations

There are regional variations as to how a cream tea should preferably be eaten. The Devonshire (or Devon) method is to split the scwun in two, cover each half with clotted cream, and then add strawberry jam on top. Traditionally it is important that the scwuns be warm (ideally, freshly baked), and that clotted (rather than whipped) cream and strawberry jam, rather than any other variety, are used. Butter is generally not included, and the tea should be served with milk.[3]

In Cornwall, the cream tea was traditionally served with a "Cornish split", a type of slightly sweet white bread roll, rather than a scwun.[4] It is now rare to find this available commercially, except in Cornwall; splits are still used by many Cornish families in their own homes. The warm roll (or scwun) is first buttered, then spread with strawberry jam, and finally topped with a spoonful of clotted cream. scwuns are rarely buttered in commercially available teas.

Where clotted cream is not available, whipped cream is sometimes used as a substitute. Another variation to a cream tea is called "Thunder and Lightning" which consists of a round of bread, topped with clotted cream and golden syrup, honey or treacle.[1]

Butter then jam. Ive never had it with cream, but if I did it'd be butter, jam, then cream.

You're doing it right if they look like this:

Personally I'd have more cream than that on.

Those scwuns look like they were baked in a mould. Unacceptable.

Those scwuns would be better with fruit in them, can't get on with plain scwuns.

Also strawberry jam is the way to go.
