The closer we get to making Weird Science a reality the better. Just think- by scanning jazz mags we could create our own personal simulacra of hot porn stars long after they died of AIDS!
The way I see it, if you're going to have a dystopia it should be a sexy one.
Once it's worked out how life came into existence it will make understanding the way biology is set up a lot easier and so medical science should benefit from it, so it would be a pretty important discovery even if it seems fairly academic now.
