Having never played DnD I would rather not jump in as a DM to start

I'd love to play but my experience with the game was all 2nd edition so massively out of date.
I don't think 5th edition is all that different appart from AC being calculated as a higher number rather than a negative number and the magic system being overhauled from the vancian system I used that didn't have cantrips and a level 1 mage was basically useless.

I have never played it, and have always wanted too. Would be cool if someone would set up a game that could be played weekly via discord and roll20.

Ashley comes and goes a lot in Season 1 - she lived IIRC in another city and had a filming schedule for a TV show to adapt around

Her comeback this is...memorable...IIRC

She tries her best and does appear via Skype when she can.
They do try and use her character without her but you can tell they're terrified of getting her killed and it kind of spoils it a little.

Yep, the guy really does get into the character of Grog :D .
He has low intelegence but he isn't playing him as a total idiot, he's just a little slow on the uptake.
Grog is a loveable tank and Travis takes what could have been a very one dimensional character and really makes him shine.

The Deck of Many Things causes the usual chaos.

This isn't a spoiler but Sams mugs get bigger and bigger as the game goes on and by series 3 he has a 5 gallon petrol container :slol: .

Don't read until resolved
That was first instance where MM let narrative take control.
Vax 100% should have been dead there

Why? By that I mean was there some rules that should have killed Vax or do you mean where he had the gnome help out? I ask about the rules as I have never, not even once, played DnD.

In terms of difficulty of enemies, his relative power, the situation he put himself in etc It should have been a completely curb stomp in terms of what they could do/how he could react. It's a long time since I watched it so can't recall specific bt MM let him live by "low impact" choices he made even as characters stated their intent to kill murder.

He won't bother you for story/narrative etc but for a "DnD game" it's pretty egregious.

I think Mat takes a less strict interpretation of the rules than many DM's. In situations where a character really should be super dead he can let things slide if he feels the outcome is better for the story. He'll let a character die if they make stupid decisions or just get completely splatted by a monster but he does have the ability to just say "strawberry float it" it's better for the story for that character to survive even if for only a bit longer.

I think he does a pretty good job of walking the tightroap of making the game still have some risk but not having characters get obliterated on a reguklar basis.

Death in 5E is rare compared to the 2E that I played where only level 15+ character had any sort of raise dead ability and you had a system where going under 0hp meant you went unconscious and -10 hp was instant death with no death saves. So if I was on 50hp and suffered 70hp damage I'm just dead with no downed state, just instant dead.

FWIW I played a mini-adventure (just a few sessions) with a couple of online friends a while ago that was set up like this. It worked fairly well! It's not quite as good as playing IRL but it was still a lot of fun.

While I could see D&D working online and I think it could be amazing as a VR experience part of the fun of the game is all being in the same room so you can take the piss out of someone for a bad roll or making a stupid decision.

That's what the Discord call is for! But you're not wrong, it's not quite the same as being around a table IRL.
