PostNeverwinter Nights MMO - E3 Trailers

Champions Online and Star Trek Online developer Cryptic is said to be working on an Neverwinter Nights MMO, according to the sources of Variety's Chris Morris.

The rumblings fit with owner Atari's past comments, including a vow that it would revive classic franchises, such as those under the Dungeons and Dragons banner, and word that Cryptic is prepping "a series of new games" based off Atari properties.

The as-yet-unconfirmed title is said to be targeting a 2011 release--the same timeframe provided for the unannounced project that was revealed when Atari bought Cryptic. As for the studio's two announced efforts, Champions Online is due on PC and Xbox 360 later this year, with Star Trek Online arriving on PC no later than March 31, 2010.

Taking place within the Forgotten Realms setting of the Dungeons and Dragons franchise, the Neverwinter Nights series arrived on PC in 2002 via developer BioWare, bearing both a single-player campaign and support for up to 75 online players per server. The fantasy RPG's 2006 sequel was handled by Obsidian, with both versions embracing community-made content through the inclusion of a mod toolset.

I am entertained by the knowledge that Neverwinter Nights may be going full-circle.

Bioware's title was originally named for an AOL massive online game based largely on the old Gold Box D&D RPG's.

And Cryptic is working on 3 that I know of. Champions Online (which is currently in Beta), Star Trek and now this. It would suggest that the Star Trek one in nearly ready for closed beta, too. So they do, at least, all occupy different conceptual spaces and can to a certain degree share technology.

I hope they can replicate one of the two main game worlds of D&D as I'd love to see a fully fleshed out krynn or Forgotten Realms. Both are absolutely huge though so it would be a huge challenge.

With D&D online stormreach going free to play this summer I wouldn't be surprised if it's a reaction to Bioware prepping a new D&D inspired MMO.

Perfect World and Cryptic Studios have released two new videos for the MMO Neverwinter, which explores the lore. The game is set on the Sword Coast where the main city of Neverwinter, Jewel of the North, sits. Of course, if you are familiar with the Forgotten Realms campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons you already know this. If not, you learned something today. One of the trailers explores the lore of Vellosk ans shows in-game content, while the other, The Siege of Neverwinter pt. 2 is a CGI affair – part one is through here. The game is slated for release sometime towards the end of the year and will be free-to-play.

I was wondering how this was going to work now that Atari is out of the frame.
