More happened in the first 40 seconds seconds of that video than the entire gameplay feed of Cuphead. There was powerups, enemies at multiple levels and an sub-boss with fast attack patterns. It immediately establishes itself as a score attack / survival game where you have the upper hand in terms of bullet hell. They refer to things like Super Meat Boy when that has core gameplay mechanics that are fairly unique to the game (wall sliding and aerobics maybe combined with salt and instadeath).

This looks pretty pedestrian by comparison, and like what might happen if someone made a mario maker level with way too many piranha plants and goombas jumping everywhere. And you permanently had flower power. At 4x the speed.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."

Yep! Metal Slug is a genuine classic of the genre. The sprite art and animation in the series is still unsurpassed! Hell Gunstar Heroes on the Mega Drive (Another classic! Go Treasure!) appeals to me more than this. Such a strawberry floating shame!

I know! Along with Alien Soldier, Radiant Silvergun and Ikaruga, it's one of Treasure's best games!

If there are new gameplay videos that aren't NSMB V0.1 with 10x the enemies and a headfuck of distractions then cool cos I was originally interested in this. But that's also one of the most insubstantial launch announcement trailers I've ever seen, which is worrying. Looks like you can go upside down now and there's flying sections which is something but that's about it.

I can't really figure out whether they're going for bullet hell or sidescrolling platformer. Like you could come up with 10 different sprites for basically the same enemy and then randomly spawn them on a field every other screen with 100 projectiles and.. that's the game. Where is the level design and the enemies with interesting routines?

I'm bitter because I always feel disappointed when they're a really ambitious art style for a game (I used to do this kind of animation at university) and then they don't know how to make a videogame fun and interesting to play.

'Cuphead' is as wondrous as it is difficult
It’ll give you finger blisters, but you’ll love it anyway.

Just take one look at Cuphead's gorgeous hand-drawn art style and you'll understand the hype. First-time indie developer Studio MDHR created a game that's as detailed and fluid as classic Disney cartoons. And it has that hint of magic that you can only get from traditional, non-CG animation. It's also a dream to play, with controls reminiscent of Contra and other extremely difficult 2D side scrollers. Simply running around and shooting enemies feels great -- and that's a good thing, since you'll be doing a lot of it.

You've got a variety of weapons to choose from, a dash-move for getting out of danger quickly, and you can also parry any pink-colored object by jumping off of them at just the right time. The vast majority of Cuphead is made up of elaborate boss fights -- and I really mean elaborate.

The bosses, and their accompanying stages, feature some of the most unique designs I've ever seen in a video game. But you won't have much time to drink in the gorgeous visuals before the bosses start filling up the screen with deadly projectiles. While there are attack patterns you'll have to learn, you'll still have to keep your wits about you for some randomized changes. Cuphead is the sort of game where you should expect to die -- a lot.

Thankfully, the game gives you a few different difficulty levels to help you get your bearings. A beautiful overworld map connects all of the different boss battles, and you can also interact with other characters there. Cuphead also features a handful of platforming stages, which should evoke plenty of classic gaming nostalgia.

In addition to playing through the game solo, you can also have a friend join you in co-op mode. That's something we don't typically see in games today, and it brought back memories of sitting on the couch for hours on end when I was a kid.

In fact, co-op mode seemed like the ideal way to confront some of Cuphead's more nefarious boss battles. It's extremely helpful to have someone cover your back. If one of you dies, your partner can also save you at the last minute by parrying your ghost before it flies offscreen. You only come back with a single health bar, but at least it keeps you in the game.

Although I only had a short amount of time with Cuphead, I'm eager for more. But then again, I've been dying to play it since Studio MDHR gave us our first glimpse back in 2014. Like No Man's Sky before it, Cuphead built up an insane amount of buzz over the years -- so much so, that I was worried it couldn't possibly meet my expectations. I certainly wasn't disappointed with my first taste of the game, but as astounding as Cuphead looks, it's also sometimes frustrating to play because it's so difficult. It's not unfair, but there are certainly points where you'll want to give up in frustration. Like any great side-scroller, though, if you invest the time you'll get better at it.

You owe it to yourself to buy Cuphead -- it simply doesn't look like any game we've had before. And while it might be tough, it's ultimately a rewarding experience.

Is it normal to be embargoed up to the day of release?

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Sometimes, A few big profile games did it but when they turned out to be poor it was a PR disaster (No mans Sky, AC Unity) so it happens less these days.

Twitterati from MS are going a bit OTT to be honest, Phil's been on about it all week and Major Nelson changed his twitter pic to it... :dread:

4-7/10 max going by what we've seen imo.

Reviews

Destructoid - 9.5/10
Cuphead's incredible style belies its magical complexity. It's so much more than a hard-as-hell shoot-'em-up with artistic flair. It's cerebral in a way that these kind of games rarely are. Cuphead's commitment to forcing the player to understand is commendable. Those who don't have the patience to learn won't get far. That's the kind of stand-your-ground moxie that makes this a hallmark of game design. My praise runneth over.

Gamesradar - 5/5
A potent cocktail of authentic 1930s aesthetics, jazzy tunes, ingenious boss designs, and gameplay founded on the fundamentals inherent to the best 2D shooters. Cuphead sure is swell.

Gamespot - 8/10
Cuphead has been a longtime coming, and it's great to see that it lives up to its initial promises. It's beautiful to look at, and with a pitch-perfect soundtrack, it flawlessly captures the era its developers so clearly revere. It's also an intense action game that pulls no punches. It could benefit from a few tweaks, and two-player co-op doesn't feel like the valuable addition you might imagine, but Cuphead remains a rare, unique game that truly stands out.

Polygon 8.5/10
Cuphead’s deal with the devil eventually leads to hell, and so perhaps it’s fitting the conclusion should be so torturous. Though, honestly, even the residual headache has been soothed by the sweet, sweet salve of victory. When I think of my time with Cuphead, instead of frustration I’ll remember the dozens of tiny breakthroughs, when the impossible became possible, and a game that built an identity around difficulty helped me to feel, however briefly, undefeatable.

Press Start - 9/10
It's a bit unfair to compare Cuphead to almost any other of the brutally tough platformers I've grown to love recently, as it lacks the filler. It gets straight to the good stuff and gives us an almost 'greatest hits' of boss fights. And if they don't get better and more rewarding as they go, I'll go eat. So while you've still got to be a masochist at heart to get through the 'true' Cuphead, people of all ages and backgrounds would be able to sit in front of the television and appreciate Cuphead for its sense of style and its ability to evoke that childlike wonder that was, until now, dormant in most of us.

Your prediction game is weak :P

(I actually thought the same, though my low end wasn't anywhere near 4.)

It's definitely going to pull a 5 in Edge, previews have been pretty negative there. Looking forward to this popping up in a sale so my cheap ass can try it out.
