I think people were expecting the Heath Ledger Joker and are getting upset because they were wrong.

Is this set before the Nolan Batman trilogy?

It's an entirely different continuity from the Nolan films. It's in the same "world" as Man of Steel and Batman v Superman next year - as will every Warner Bros/DC film from here on out.

The film looks gooseberry fool anyway so I don't know what the fuss is but, for what it's worth, I think this Joker looks like a brilliant new take on the character and Leto is a fine actor who'll do well. I like it. He looks like a proper psychopath.

Now Harley Quinn, that is some shitty, boring design.
