Welcome to the Digital Combat Simulator thread!

Image
By Eagle Dynamics & The Fighter Collection

Digital Combat Simulator
Digital Combat Simulator World (DCS World) is a free-to-play digital military battlefield simulation developed by Eagle Dynamics (ED). It includes a free Sukhoi Su-25T attack aircraft and TF-51D Mustang, and is extensible through additional DCS modules as well as user-made add-ons and mods.

DCS World includes a vast mission area of the Caucasus region that encompasses much of Georgia - the location of the Russo-Georgian war in 2008.

Additionally, DCS World includes: powerful mission and campaign editors, online multiplayer, massive inventory of air, land and sea combat units and weapons, advanced AI, fast mission generator, dynamic weather and seasons, training missions, mission replay system, and pilot log book.

This all allows the creation of engaging, real-world combat missions in this flashpoint region. DCS is a true "sandbox" simulation that can and will in the future cover multiple time periods covering many types of combat and civilian units. DCS World allows both realistic game play and more relaxed game play to suit the player.

DCS modules that can plug into DCS World include aircraft, maps, ground units, campaigns, etc. Not only does DCS World include modules developed internally by Eagle Dynamics, but it also includes those by certified third party developers.

I Have been a fan of the DCS series for a long time. With a sale now on the vast majority of DCS titles, I thought it was about time to create this thread and see if more people were interested in this genre of video game too.

Are Combat Flight Sims for me?
- Do you want to experience the thrill and challenge of aerial combat? or how about providing CAS to units on the ground? or why not fly some Classic WWII fighters!

What do I need to play?
- Ideally a joystick of some sort. Although it is not necessary it makes the game much easier and accessible (unless you are a pro with the Keyboard & Mouse!)

Why Should I play?
- The DCS series is a fantastic simulation that strikes an excellent balance between fun and realism. It is also a very different from of video game, it is not the type of product you can just "pick up" and expect to be good at. It takes a practice and can have a steep learning curve but at the end there is a huge sense of satisfaction, something few other games can offer.

How Difficult is it?
- Well that depends on how you want to play! Either you can indulge in a full "Study Sim" like DCS:A10c or DCS:BlackShark requiring you to learn various aspects of the aircraft from start up, to weapons, even including Countermeasures! Or you can fly in a more basic mannor such as the ones included with DCS:world or in DCS FC3. These provide you with superb visuals and a fantastic experience without having to go through every single little procedure.

- If you love the sound of Combat Flight Sim Shenanigans but don't have DCS:World ? You can get it on either:

The Eagle Dynamics webpage

*excluding add-on modules such as DCS:FC3 or DCS:A10C

N.B. It is entirely up to you which version you use. Personally I have the Standalone version, and have bought the modules direct from DCS/ED as I like to keep this separate from steam.

As I said in PCGT: Volume V

All Digital Combat Simulator Products are on sale. So if you want to get into combat flight sims, now is the best time!

Best bang for your buck is DCS: Flaming Cliffs 3 as it is currently only $15.99 (60% off!)

DCS: Flaming Cliffs 3 (FC3) is the next evolution of the LOCK ON MODERN AIR COMBAT (LOMAC)/Flaming Cliffs series. FC3 features the F-15C, A-10A, Su-27, Su-33, MiG-29A, MiG-29S, Su-25T, and Su-25. FC3 aircraft provide an easy learning curve for new players and focuses on a broad range of aircraft rather than a detailed single aircraft. FC3 adds a number of new features and improvements to previous versions of the Flaming Cliffs series. FC3 is a module of DCS: World, which makes it compatible with all other DCS: World titles like A-10C, Black Shark 2, P-51D, and Combined Arms.

Equipment/ peripherals worth investing in:
really only need these 2

HOTAS joystick - Any kind of Hands On Throttle And Stick combo unit, what ever is in your price range/what ever you are comfortable with.

Track IR - essential for situational awareness and getting the most of the beautiful 6 Degrees of freedom (6DOF) cockpits.

others:

Thrustmaster MFDS :extra inputs

Rudder pedals: For controlling the Yaw of the aircraft with more accuracy. (Some joysticks will have this built into them with a z rotation)

I think DCS World is still the best bang for your buck. It is F2P, with modules you can add to it.

Correct! Just like I explained in the op, but there are limitations. For one you only get the su25 which is used as a CAS platform and an unarmed version of the P51. Both of which are ideal for learning but dont offer quite the range of combat roles as FC3.

Regardless of which module you want to get you will still need DCS:World

Ideally you will want a joystick with a separate throttle unit i.e. HOTAS

Basic tier: Cyborg F.L.Y 5 : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Saitek-MCB43302 ... CYBORG+FLY

Good tier: Saitek X52 / x52pro : http://www.amazon.co.uk/X52-Pro-Flight- ... rds=x52pro

God tier: Thrustmaster Hotas : http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrustmaster-Ho ... TJ5S664K0A

If you are only going to play one game than start low and work your way up. If you are like me and play a lot of Flight sims (mainly Combat/study Sims) then get the Thrustmaster one.

If you want to go nuts, get some rudder pedals ( http://www.amazon.co.uk/Saitek-Flight-C ... der+pedals ) and some MFD's (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrustmaster-Re ... master+mfd)

Also definitely worth investing in the TrackIR : http://www.naturalpoint.com/trackir/products/trackir5/
best peripheral I have bought to date.

DCS: September Newsletter Highlights & Stuff
Ripping the most interesting segments for the official DCS Newsletter available here.

--

DCS: F/A-18C Hornet Update

"Perhaps the most eagerly awaited DCS module, the Hornet, is indeed in progress... it really does exist! More so than any other of our past and current projects though, the Hornet requires a massive amount of work, not just the creating of the art assets and programming of the cockpit functions, but also a great deal of research, design documentation, building of supersonic aircraft flight dynamics (F-15C with BST and Su-27 have been helping to create this technology), acquiring source data, and creating several new technologies like air-to-surface radar.

In addition to the actual aircraft, there are other elements that need to be created such as an improved Nimitz-class aircraft carrier, much better carrier operations, and a new combat theater map tailored to this aircraft. We hear you and realize that many of you are very anxious and looking forward to hearing more about this project. As we get closer to an early beta, we will be discussing this more."

Here are some very early images of the cockpit.

Image

Su-27 for DCS World
Image

"As we did for the F-15C, we will be updating the Su-27 for DCS World to include a Professional level flight model. Development of this updated Flanker is well underway and will be free as part of Flaming Cliffs 3.
We will also sell the Su-27 for DCS World as a separate download later in 2014."

Nevada Test and Training Range (NTTR) Map
Image

"Work continues on the NTTR map. The primary objective is to adapt the various map assets to work within DCS World. Once this effort is complete and DCS World 2.0 is available, we plan to release this map soon afterwards."

DCS World 2.0 Coming in 2014
Image

The next iteration of DCS World (formerly 1.3.0) is currently in internal testing and will be available as a free download later in 2014. All DCS modules will be fully compatible with DCS World 2.0. As with DCS World 1.0, 2.0 will also include the FREE TF-51D and Su-25T. New features of DCS World 2.0, but subject to change, include:

DirectX 11 support
Improved game performance
New and improved lighting
Improved effects
New water animations
Improved shadows
Unified GUI that eliminates the need for separate GUI and simulation .exe while also speeding up mission load times. Later, this will also allow us to integrate simulation elements into the Encyclopaedia and Mission Editor
Ability to access new maps that will be sold as separate modules
New grass and clutter
New clouds
Ability to create dedicated server
Skeleton animations
Depth of field support
Improved Oculus VR support

Some of these features may not be included in the initial DCS World 2 release.

Bigger news that wasn't part of the September Newsletter...

:!: DCS: STRAIT OF HORMUZ MAP COMING IN WINTER 2014 :!:

DUXFORD, UK, September 11th, 2014 – DCS: Strait of Hormuz map coming in winter 2014.
The Fighter Collection and Eagle Dynamics are pleased to announce that DCS: Strait of Hormuz map will be coming to DCS World in the winter of 2014. This will be the first, new combat theatre maps for DCS World 2!

The DCS: Strait of Hormuz map is the strategic choke point between the oil-rich Persian Gulf and the rest of the world. Flanked by Iran to the North and western-supported UAE and Oman to the south, this has been one of the world’s most potentially dangerous flash points for decades. The region also includes the vast Arabian Sea that is well-suited to combat aircraft carrier operations. Be it from land bases in Iran, UAE and Oman, or from the deck of an aircraft carrier, the DCS: Strait of Hormuz map will offer a wide array combat mission scenarios to prove your mettle.

Key Features of the DCS: Strait of Hormuz Map:

• 390 x 390 km highly detailed map area that centers on the Strait of Hormuz.
• As part of DCS World 2, it will support highly detailed terrain, textures, and buildings.
• Numerous, accurately rendered airbases in Iran, the UAE and Oman.
• Detailed cities such as Dubai and Bandar Abbas with unique buildings.
• “Strong Hold” islands such as Abu Musa and Greater Tunb.
• Iran, the UAE and Oman will be added to the list of DCS World nations.

DCS: Strait of Hormuz map will be released as a separate module that will be available for sale from the DCS e-shop in the winter of 2014.

Please note that all included images are work in progress images from our land viewer tool and not within DCS World 2.

Awww yeah Russian Supremacy!!!

Su-27 for DCS World is now available for pre-purchase!

The Su-27, NATO codename Flanker, is one of the pillars of modern-day Russian combat aviation. Built to counter the American F-15 Eagle, the Flanker is a twin-engine, supersonic, highly manoeuvrable air superiority fighter. The Flanker is equally capable of engaging targets well beyond visual range as it is in a dogfight given its amazing slow speed and high angle attack manoeuvrability. Using its radar and stealthy infrared search and track system, the Flanker can employ a wide array of radar and infrared guided missiles. The Flanker also includes a helmet-mounted sight that allows you to simply look at a target to lock it up! In addition to its powerful air-to-air capabilities, the Flanker can also be armed with bombs and unguided rockets to fulfil a secondary ground attack role.

Su-27 for DCS World focuses on ease of use without complicated cockpit interaction, significantly reducing the learning curve. As such, Su-27 for DCS World features keyboard and joystick cockpit commands with a focus on the most mission critical of cockpit systems.

Su-27 for DCS World will sell for $9.99 at November 15th. Pre Purchase now for $7.99 and save 20%!

Note: This will be a free update to owners of Flaming Cliffs 3!

Key Features of the Su-27 for DCS World:
A professional level flight model provides unmatched flight physics that allow you to truly feel what it's like to fly this amazing aircraft.
A true model of the Su-27 flight control system that allows you to perform the “cobra” and other “out of the envelope” manoeuvres.
Updated Head Down Display (HDD) with more realistic data link and navigation modes.
Highly detailed, six-degrees-of-freedom (6 DOF) cockpit.
Accurate Su-27 Flanker model, squadron markings, and weapons.
New instant action, single missions and interactive training missions.
Battle the F-15C in head-to-head.
