You may or may not be familiar with a mod called Dear Esther. It is a single-player mod for Half-Life 2 created by Dan Pinchbeck, described as an interactive narrative first-person game. Well a certain Robert Briscoe who's worked on games like Mirrors Edge is doing a remake and it looks simply stunning. All source engine remember. Check out this update trailer for one of the levels. Also checkout the moddb page and Briscoe's blog for more screens an info.

For those that haven't tried the original Dear Esther, I'd say it's worth checking out. Obviously the original game doesn't look anything near the quality as seen in the new updated version, but it's an interesting experience none the less. Though I did find some part's a bit glitchy.

I absolutely love this mod, beautifully written with oodles of atmosphere. You might want to check out Korsakovia, also by the Chinese Room.

It's really creepy, has more action than Dear Esther, which is kind of where it falls down a bit- it can be quite confusing and annoying at times, but it's well worth sticking with it.

Expected a tribute to That's Life. Planning to finish Half-Life 2 this weekend, only took about 3 years.

That looks phenomenal!

It's really staggering to see how good Source still looks amongst fresh and new engines coming out in recent years.

That's running on Source engine? strawberry float me, it looks good. Looks a bit like a better version of the caves in the opening of Oblivion, too.

Although having seen that, I think I'll have to wait until this new version is out before trying it.

Over the past few months, we've managed to implement a more realistic swaying foliage system that is much more efficient and the standard Valve implementation. We moved a lot of the calculations onto the gpu and utilised the SSE instruction calculations for the CPU side of things.

The video is a little jumpy for some reason, but it gives you a rough idea of how it looks in-game.

No response because the trailer shows off bugger all, perhaps?

I'm interested, but I'm trying to maintain a low profile. Plus my PC's rubbish and probably won't run it properly.

If you play the original you'd know what it's about, it's a narrative based interactive story. It's not like a full on game, it's more about the atmosphere.

Just finished this. A stunningly written, visually gorgeous piece of work that is oozing in atmosphere and emotion. It took me about 2 hours to finish, and I was hooked the whole way. The story is very well written and interesting, with so much symbology and subtle things to find. This is highly recommended.

The soundtrack is just so hauntingly beautiful.

I feel bad as I haven't bought it yet seeing as I started this thread, but I intend to soon. I'm glad to see it's getting a good reviews, though I was confident it would. Looks incredible from an atmospheric point of view.

I remember my friend mentioning this ages ago. Just watched the trailer and it looks like something that would be right up my street (love my atmospheric games). Got loads to play at the moment so might pick it up in a few months time.

I love this game. Finally, someone makes me a game where I can just slowly walk around looking at stuff, listening to a story being told. Gorgeous. It's not really a game at all...it's just a strange, melancholy, ambient experience.

Some screens I took from the earliest part of the game...
