When is clear that someone has broken into your home then I think I agree but there’s so many cases where it’s not clear, especially in America where you will get shot for just walking onto someone’s driveway. Being a postman there in rural areas must be terrifying.

Yeah I don't necessarily apply the same thought towards someone just being on your driveway/garden, only once they actually break into your home.

No, if you're walking past my house and you look at it - you're dead

A friend of mine has a BMW M6 and lives with his elderly parents as his dad needs care, a gang of lads came to the door with knives and demanded the car from his confused dad (alzheimers). My friend did 100% the right thing, put himself between them and his dad and gave them the keys.

Car had a tracker and the police had it back within a day and he has beefed up security on his driveway and house. Still, if another gang with weapons turned up I expect he'd hand over rather than sit tight in fort knox.

If anyone tried to break into my house it would almost certainly be for the car. I have a child in the house so I have zero interest in escalating the situation and I would probably just hand over the keys if it came to violence, as long as it keeps them out of the house. The car has a tracker and every panel of it is etched so Id have a good chance of getting it back, though not sure if Id want it.

The keys for both my cars are right by the front door, you can't miss them. If an intruder is coming up my stairs then he's not after my cars and is fair game for a mullering.

Not really sure what I'd do, probably try to avoid escalating it too much and just tell the guy to strawberry float off. Was adamant I had a burglar before (spate of them in the area, wind had blown the door open and rain sounded like footsteps to my stoned mind), just went searching with an empty beer bottle in hand. Think that's a more natural carry than the immediate escalation you'd have with a knife in hand.

Realistically even with kids no-one's gonna break into your house to strawberry float a kid up. Boy in my year from school's still in jail after breaking into a home then repeatedly stabbing someone who tried to fight him.

It's a tough call but if the guy drops the gooseberry fool he's stealing and heads out after you shouting at him that'd do for me, just call the police after.

We had a case like this in the UK many years ago, with a farmer by the name of Tony Martin.

Whilst I obviously don't agree with murder, I do fall down on the side of one's rights going out the window once you trespass on private property (especially when you are intent on stealing from and potentially causing injury to others). These cases could well be argued as self-defence. The bottom line is that neither of these incidents would have occurred if these people had stayed away.

I mean is anyone seriously not going to try and defend their family and belongings to the absolute fullest extent? It's absurd. What is a homeowner supposed to do? Let an intruder run wild, take whatever they like, perhaps commit a rape or two, maybe even push the boat out and offer them a cup of tea, all in the name of avoiding a prison sentence? It's an impossible situation.

Tony Martin was an interesting case, I sort of agree that if you break into somebody else's home then you are accepting the risks, but Tony Martin was not just a family man defending himself as your final paragraph suggested.

He lived alone and had an illegal weapon. He had previous for shooting at people that were taking apples. The police believe he was lying in wait for burglars to get revenge. And he shot the burglar in the back as he was fleeing.

I don't think the penalty for burglary should be death and so killing somebody can only be justified if you are defending yourself. Having an illegal weapon, lying in wait and shooting them as they run away? For me that is going way too far.

I had to smash my own window once, because I'd lost my keys. Later that night, I was so outraged that someone had broken into my house, I threw the perp down the stairs.
