I love sitting in a pub to watch the football, especially when it’s not too busy. Probably go in a couple of times a month.

Other than Walkabout the only other ones I visit are ones in the country, but they're more like restaurants these days I suppose and I'll only have a carvery and a single pint when I do visit.

That's what I love about our Walkabout, a huge projector and 10 wide-screen TVs hanging from the ceilings.

Our local pubs just have a faded projector and a small CRT stuck in the corner.

Nah the Sun Inn is a mostly white 17th century pub on castle street i.e. opposite side of town to the station :P

Never heard of the star, had a search and "This pub closed in the 1980s"

I think Sky Sports/BT sports is a major cause of pubs closing, or nearing to closing for good. My local pays £20k per year to show the live footy (and other sports of course). An average day in my local will see around 6 or 7 regular daily drinkers, and maybe another 10-20 people over the day. It's not uncommon to just have 2 or 3 people in. During a Liverpool/Everton live game, there might be 20-50 people. So it's 'empty' most of the time. Paying 20k for footy probably just about breaks even. Then BT sports is extra too (not sure on the cost of that but it must be 10k +). Pubs in more well off areas get charged more than that too.

But this obviously has the knock on effect of increasing pump prices, even though £3 per pint is reasonable, as it's in a very poor area. However, other pubs in more well off areas, the average pint might be £4.50. That is expensive to drink regularly. A litre of cans/bottles in Tesco is about 80p per pint roughly. Big difference.

The only reason I tend to go to a pub these days is for food, either with the family on a weekend or for a lunch with work colleagues. I can't actually remember the last time I would have gone to the pub just for a drink with mates or to watch football.

I do love a good pub though. Get a good selection of ales on tap, let me sit by a nice open fire, give me a pool table or darts to play and load me up with some nice pub food and I will be a very happy individual!

Used to love meeting up with friends at a country pub and going for a nice long walk that loops back to the pub just in time for some great food, particularly during the winter time when you can get back in and really feel the warmth of the place seep back into your bones! These days it's harder to do this stuff as we've got kids that tend not to enjoy the rambling quite so much but in a few years I'm hoping they'll all be up for it!

Do you go there? If you do there's a good chance you've come across my Dad.

Only been a couple of times as I'm not much of a drinker and also a loner but I work on that road. By the time I'm done most nights they will be shut and I don't think its wise for me to have a drink before a shift. :slol:

Next time I'm there I shall announce myself and ask if Drumsticks Daddy is in da house.

It is crazy now how quickly your bank balance can be drained on a night out. Everywhere seems to have crept past the £5/pint mark now so depending on group size you are in trouble when it's your round.

Go to the pub most weeks on a Friday evening or a Saturday and when i can watch Arsenal play. I do play for a pub team on a Sunday so will pop in after most games but normally have a soft drink or tea (team mates thinks i'm nuts for drinking tea in a pub).

There’s a Masonic lodge near me that’s very cheap and has good big screens for the football but having been raised Catholic I find myself bursting into flames whenever I cross the threshold for sone reason.

I'll pay you a visit on Saturday so for a few minutes you will know what it's like not to be a loner. We can discuss things like Mario Kart and Jawa's video game failings.

Go to the pub every Wednesday for Boardgames group.
Get an OK/Good Burger, side and Drink for about £12 before.
It's ok - but never right. Too dark ("atmospheric"), or gooseberry fool music (or even when decent music too loud)

Loud music is the worst, unless there is a band on. Then it depends how good the band is

The pubs wierd.

It seems to be the bar staff's spotify choices - but you'll never know which staff is on, and who's picking.

Sometimes it'll veer wildly from playlist to playlist, other times it'll be a short selection of the same songs again and again.

I do a pub quiz a couple of times a month and tend to drink with my girlfriend on the weekends. Drink prices are crazy though. We end up paying 8-10 for a gin and tonic. If it was cheaper we'd probably be go more tbh.

Million and one reasons why the Pub/Club scene is seeing a drastic reduction in trade ranging from changing attitudes in young people, better entertainment options both in and out of the house in the evenings, drink prices, and even silly things like Tinder.

I still do a pub quiz once a week and also im still just about young enough to run around a football pitch on a Sunday morning so relatively speaking to most in this thread still go to the pub quite a lot I guess. Also occasionally go in to watch a game of football or to avoid paying Eddie Hearn's ridiculous boxing PPV prices.

Damn millennials, ruining pubs with extremely expensive drinks by daring to grow up in an unstable economy with reduced earnings growth and long-term stability, how dare they!

On a more serious note, where I've lived in the London outskirts has a single average Wetherspoons which is...fine for a meal or weekend breakfast out but I wouldn't want to go 'out' there. There's also a pub/club place that looks dodgy as hell and I've never been tempted to set foot in there in all the years I've lived here. Luckily I'm moving out of London soon so am looking forward to finding a local to frequent every now and again.

I'll probably be working but you can have a drink for every Zelda Jawa has finished.
