This NPC called Ostrava seems to either have died or simply disappeared (I think his death might be my fault as I didn't go straight to fighting Phalanx after rescuing him in 1-1, I left and came back so I assume he got mobbed by respawned enemies) I've read online that he is part of a side quest that ultimately leads to one of the game's best weapons. Is it worth starting from scratch or can I just do the quest in New Game Plus?

I don't think you need to go fight Phalanx straight away, you just have to make sure the area he patrols is clear of enemies, particularly blue knights. Before starting your game again you should go check 1-2 because he should appear again near the beginning of that area if he survived in the first big room with the spear slime things, he is on the left-hand side behind a grate..

Are the online servers still running for Europe?
Is it true that the game is so hard that it is unenjoyable.

Yes.
No.

Anyway I finished my first playthrough the other day after trying to kill the last boss about 50 times. I have to admit that a combination of being fried by the blue dragon multiple times, being invaded by far more skillful players on at least four occasions and losing about 300,000 souls on said boss nearly drove me insane. I eventually did it though after changing my tactics and using my magic more appropriately. That was definitely the hardest part of the game for me as a melee class and the hardest level overall was the second chapter of Valley of Defilement. I've already started a New Game + but I'm probably going to start Dark Souls later today.

I hear you. But do you knows if the servers are fully functional for the first game. You see I want to test out the online part.

As I said above, they are based on my experience over the last month. I didn't see any players asking for summons at bosses but I got invaded by Black Phantoms (other players in soul form) plenty of times and got lots of ratings for any helpful messages I left. I'd guess that most of the people still playing are doing high level pvp but the online stuff still works at the moment.

Also based on that experience I would say don't skip Demon's Souls 8-)

Cheers for the help! I know where you find him in 1-2 (I saved him on a failed previous attempt at a playthrough) but he just isn't there this time. I'll try having a look tonight but if he ain't there I reckon a walkthrough is in order.

Another question, if I make a mistake for example the Ostrava thing and want to erase it can I just quit using the XMB or would it autosave after the mistake?

EDIT: I did have to start again and I've decided as much as it might spoil the game to use a walkthrough combined with backing up my save to cloud storage at regular intervals and trying to avoid leaving an area until I've cleared all the monsters out and killed the boss.

After slowly progressing through 3-1, picking up every item I could find (including some pretty well hidden stuff), rescuing that Sage dude I was finally on my way to the boss when I got killed by the invisible archer just before the boss arena. I tried to make it back there but got killed again by the first Mindflayer looking guy :( That was approx 10,000 souls and nearly 2 hours progress lost. I think I need to download my backup from after 2-1 and then do a spot of grinding in 2-1 before progressing as I remember those fat Mage guys being pretty valuable. Either that or farm the 1-1 Red Eye Knight.

I like how this game is challenging without ever feeling unfair. If I die I know it was my fault for not being careful or not preparing properly. It might take a while but I want to see this through to the end.

Is that the guy who keeps shouting for help? I passed someone in a floor full of cells I have no key for. I know later on you can rescue Lord Rydell but you need pure white world tendency and mine never changes.

Also aren't you meant to kill Yurt as he kills NPCs at The Nexus?

I'm making progress with this slowly but surely. I've had quite a productive day today as so far I've bumped off the Tower Knight, the Adjudicator and the Flying Red Dragon.

Didn't get to play this much over the weekend due to work, but I've got four days off after today so I know what I'll be doing.

I'm going to do the Depths next. Hated that place the first time around, the curse frog things :x

Got the US version of this the other day (so I could play via their still active servers), feels very much the same coming from Dark Souls, but at least I understand the core concepts of battle in this game (compared to learning DS from scratch).

I'm about to restart my play as a Royal, will pick up a short spear from the 1-1 merchant too. Once I've done a couple of suicide runs on the Dragon's Nest, I'll tackle the bridge it usually breathes fire over.

Which one is harder? This or Dark Souls?

Dark Souls is much harder IMO, if you play as Royalty you'll find most of the game relatively easy if you're careful, keep your distance and cast your spells quick enough.

You can't kill the Dragons in 1-1 by the way. The Red Dragon can be killed in 1-2 by firing Soul Arrow at it while on a tower and the Blue Dragon can be killed in 1-4 by firing Soul Arrow at it while standing just out of range of his fire.

Saved that bloke in 1-1, got the Thief Ring (ninja rolls FTW!) and then lured the Red Knight to an untimely suicide  Then went into that room beside him (because the guy I rescued ended up getting killed by regular enemies, dropping the key :fp: ). I think I'll try the Thief ring on that dragon den of goodies to see how effective it really is... :slol:
