Joer I got to the same point as you, pretty much. I killed Phalanx, went onward, I think some NPC was kicking about who died I think.
The menus are a disgrace, having not much of an idea what weapons/armour are up to, carry weights, all of those symbols...
What I'm trying to say is if you don't like it then don't play it.

Careful though, as that box is likely to have a few pointy edges on the corners so Buff may hurt himself.

Starting Demon Souls later tonight. I haven't played a properly difficult game for quite a while, so I wonder how I will take to it. Some of the games everyone heralded as difficult last gen (like Viewtiful Joe), I found easy enough with practice, patience and care, so hopefully this falls into that school of difficulty rather than being simply unfair.

Demon's Souls is never unfair, if you die then its pretty much always your fault.

Playing on the Dualshock 4 is a dream though

Demon Souls with a DS4 you say? Hmmm...... Sounds like

This has finally clicked with me. I had put a couple of hours into it since it came on Plus but never really committed to actually giving it a proper fair look in. Very glad I went back to it.

Armor Spider had been kicking my ass so I decided to try somewhere else. I beat it with ease after going to 4-1, grinding out souls and getting much better equipment. Dat health regen ring.

I've got an ever increasing amount of souls amassing in the 4-1 boss area, who I have't even come close to beating yet. We'll see how long I can keep going back and trying before giving up and losig them.

Soul Arrow has also been pretty crucial in my successes, I'll definitely be putting more points into magic.

The game has a wonderful atmosphere. It does a lot with very little. Music is fantastic too.

I decided to start this and try to finish it before the PC version of Dark Souls II comes out. I picked the Knight class as my starting character and I've beaten the Phalanx. I'm trying to make my way through the bridge that is being attacked by the dragon, just after the Phalanx. I made it to the end of the third part of the bridge, where a group of archers and knights are waiting for you, but one of the knights attacked me from behind so I'm back at the beginning of the bridge.

The game feels a lot like Dark Souls (shocker) and would be just as enjoyable if the frame rate didn't stutter during big events. The game slowed down during the Phalanx fight and pretty much every time the dragon swoops over the bridge to burn anything that tries to cross it. The slow down is a disappointing part of what is likely to be an incredible game. I dread to think what the console version of Dark Souls II will be like.

I just got a PS3 just to play this game and I just beat the first boss. I've played Dark Souls to death, and gotten pretty good at it, I can run about on Dark Souls with 10+ humanity for my chaos weapon and 150k+ souls and not really worry about dying too much (at least not dying twice before collecting my blood stain), but this game seems a fair bit harder. The half health when you die and having to rely on consumables instead of a refillable estus flask means I should probably put much more thought into what i'm doing and not just wildly experiment. My character seems a lot weaker at the start than on Dark Souls as well (picked thief which may have been a mistake), but maybe that's just me not knowing how to do weapon runs into the deeper areas of the game.

Is magic vital for this game? I usually try a pure melee build out on my first playthrough of a game like this until I get the gist of everything, but I've gotten the impression from reading online that may not be the wisest course.

If you want an easier time with this game the play as a Royal. It's the only class to start with an offensive spell. When you level up your intelligence the damage dealt by spells is incredible. You'll likely end up lacking defence and HP but you'll be able to oneshot almost every standard enemy in the game.

Maximising your characters effectiveness is one thing, but playing a Souls game with a view to making it an easy ride is not what these games are about.

This game doesn't feel as complete or refined as Dark Souls, I can kind of tell where they have realized 'that wasn't quite right we gotta work on that' with some things and in Dark Souls those things are better.

When I got Dark Souls I was wandering around Game, spotted it on the shelf and remember vaguely hearing good things about it so it was an impulse buy, then I was immediately sucked into this bleak and amazing world with the great gameplay. This hasn't quite happened with Demon's Souls, the nexus and different worlds doesn't feel quite right and there are a few flaws. Still a very good game so far but I think i'm just gonna take my time with it and do a few bosses each week.

I think the best refinement they made between Demon's and Dark is reigning in the overpowered magic system. In Demon's you had unlimited use of spells rather than needing to refresh them like in Dark. Because of this a high level magic user could coast through most of Demon's one shotting everything in sight with Soul Arrow and later Soul Ray.

I finished in 25 hours and at SL76. Dark Souls definitely helped me get through this as I knew to be cautious when fighting enemies and to explore the land carefully instead of running around without a care. The slowdown definitely brought the game down when it occurred as it always happened during busy moments that require more care but it's still an excellent game. In addition to the smooth frame rate, I also say that I prefer Dark because the environments are a lot more varied and so intricately connected that you feel like you're on a grand adventure. Nonetheless, I'm glad that I played through Demon's and I hope that I enjoy Dark 2 as much.

Getting more interested in trying this, mainly due to having it on Plus and hearing constant praise for the Souls games on podcasts I listen to.

I've looked at guides for beginners to make it more palatable for a newb who doesn't have the time to waste tens of hours trying to break the difficulty barrier. I just wondered if there is still an online presence as presumably that was a big part of the game? If not I might try DS2 and come back to the earlier games when I know what I'm doing.
