Story

King Allanti the twelfth, in search for power and prosperity, channeled the power of souls. He brought unprecedented prosperity to his northern kingdom of Boletaria. That is, until a thick black fog covered the lands outskirts, cutting out the kingdom from the outside world. Those who entered the fog never returned.

But Vallarfax of the royal Twin Fangs broke free from the fog and told the world of Boletaria's plight. The aging King Allanti had awakened the Old One, the great beast below the Nexus, from its eternal slumber. And that a dark fog had swept in, unleashing soul-craving demons. The ones that lost their souls, also lost their minds. Chaos reigned, the mad attacking the sane. The Demons grow stronger and more powerful with each soul they devour. The legend was told from man to man, mightly warriors entered the cursed lands but none have returned.

Gameplay

Demon's Souls is an open-ended dark fantasy action RPG. Players are able to customize their own characters, setting the name, gender, hair style and others. Players face off against huge beasts many times the size of the character, making use of a variety of different weapons. The gameplay alters depending on what type of weapon the player wields.

Character classes

The player can choose between ten different classes of characters, each with different starting attributes:

Knight: Southern knights of Boletaria, strong and heavy armored.
Priest: Warriors of the priesthood, they have faith in God and use miracles.
Thief: Work under the cover of darkness, sneaking up behind enemies.
Magician: Masters of magic, poor physical offensive and defensive skills.
Temple Knight: Strong warriors that also use defensive miracles to their advantage.
Soldier: Skilled in combat, able to handle many types of weapons.
Wanderer: Low armored but fast and agile, skilled with swords.
Barbarian: Uncivilized people not wearing any armor, physically strong.
Royal: Aristocrats users of offensive magic, starts with valuable magic rings.
Hunter: Specialized in outdoor activities, skilled with bows, light on armor.

Online features

* Co-Operative up to three player can team up to play levels.
* Messaging/Educational mode, players can leave hints and advice in the game to help other players.
* Competitive, a player can force into another gamers adventure and play as an opponent.

Eurogamer:

Demon's Souls is absolutely compelling; dark, detailed, unforgiving, creatively cruel. It gets under your skin and becomes a personal obsession, daring you to probe further into its worlds, fall for more of its traps and overcome more of its impossible challenges; it slaps you in the face with your own incompetence and dares you to overcome it.

It's stoic, uncompromising, difficult to get to know, but also deep, intriguingly disturbed and perversely rewarding. You can learn to love Demon's Souls like few other games in the world. But only if you're prepared to give yourself over to it.

9/10

Looks and sounds wonderful. Can't wait for this and White Knight Chronicles to get Western releases. Hopefully this will be at E3.

I guess I'm buying this game then. Will join you online Suzz. Don't know if I'm going to get White Knight though. This game looks more appealing already.

There is room in my heart for both.

The online for both games sounds good but Demon Souls' sounds better.

The Asian version of the game has English voices and menus, so you wouldn't even need to wait for a western release.

You unutterable bastard. I have no strawberry floating money, but now I really want this. I wanted it before, but knowing that it's all import-friendly 'n' gooseberry fool...man.

This is the first I've heard of the game, a 9/10 from Eurogamer is impressive to me, and what I'm already in love with is the art style and how dark it is. I have a love of dark and gothic art styles, I don't think it's anything emo, but I think humans in general are drawn towards the dark and morbid stuff.

Does the Asian version of the game have any issues that we wouldn't have if we bought the UK release? I imagine that it will be getting some form of DLC and patches, and servers in the UK might not be accessible from the Asian version of the game? What's the dealio?

I've got a love for co-op games and so far I've only got L4D to satiate my cravings.

I bet it's not as hard as Shiren or Etrian Odyssey II.

If it cheers you up then everyone else knows it's easy to import too, so it's sold out at all the usual import outlets. The rubbish conversion rate also makes it pretty expensive.

Yay! Ships in 30 days! So that means no-one can get it yet, presumably.

Meh, I've got Nalaku and (hopefully tomorrow) The Dark Spire to keep grinding me down. I don't need another dose of bleak in my life just yet.

*weeps openly*

£45? No way.

I can wait. I'm hoping Degoose wanders into this thread and has a look at the game and likes it. I'm sure he'd be up for some co-op fun in this game as well. Max I'll pay for a 9/10 game is 35 quid. I'm not prepared to go any higher and may even wait for it to drop to 30 or 25 quid.

I think I might hold off until E3 and see if they announce a US release date. If that is too far off I will have to pick this up.

I hope this game doesn't omit the 'loot'. I don't want my choice in choosing a character make me limited to the same weapon throughout the game, I'd like to be able to upgrade it or switch it with a better version that the class will allow.

 Awesome! Hopefully there's a demo released so we can try it out. My PS3 has been getting a lot more attention recently than the 360 and a lot of that is due to the free online play.

Really...what have you been playing online?

Killzone 2. I actually haven't touched the PS3 online over the last few weeks, but that's a whole lot more than me not touching the 360 at all for a few months. Also been playing Pixeljunk Monsters 8-)

Keep an eye on White Knight Chronicles too then.
