I'd like to play one of the Souls games. I've never played any of them before and I can't really be bothered to play through the whole series. Which one should I go for?

Dark Souls is more forgiving and a better world. DeS is based on levels and worlds, like Boletaria Palace is world 1 with levels 1-1 to 1-4 type deal while DaS is more MetroidVania like. DeS has a more complex upgrade mechanic than DaS and is more unforgiving of death, cutting your HP down to around 50%. It also has a few mechanics under the surface to keep an eye on and a more dead online scene.

They're both as good as the other but DaS is probably a better one-off. If you were going the whole series then DeS starting point for sure.

This.

While Dark Soul's is slightly better IMO Demon Souls is Harder and gives you that accomplishment feeling

PLAY | Persona 3 Reloaded [3h]
WATCH | Ted Lasso S3, HiJack S1, Red Dwarf S4, Dexter S2
RACE | Chew Valley 10k (June), GNR (Sept), Cardiff Half (Oct)

Demons is miles easier because you can stockpile healing items

Dark's the more complete game IMO but both are very good

I found Dark harder but that might have been because it was my first time. I did significantly better in my first foray into Demon's than Dark. I even nearly beat the first boss on my first go. Not the Phalanx, the other one. I did beat the Phalanx on my first go.

My vote is Demon's Souls. Played that through to completion but gave up on Dark Souls.

What made you give up?

Frustration at the boss at Blight Town. Must have fought it 5 + times and it gets frustrating when you have to spend a certain amount of time getting back to it, only to die and start the process again. Basically, it had become a chore and had stopped being fun.

The boss at Blighttown took me a few goes too, but it sounds like you didn't find the bonfire in the Swamp? It should only really take thirty to forty seconds - or ten seconds if you aren't bothered about getting poisoned, e.g. if you have a lot of purple moss - to get to Quelaag.

On the whole I found demon's far easier than dark souls, but then I'd finished dark before.

I preferred demons, but if you're only going to play one then I guess you can't go work with dark.

Then finished dark and get a taste for it, git GUD and then play the whole series

I just spammed the gooseberry fool out of Quelaag. I even stood in her lava burning away and still beat her.

Demon's is a lot more old school, level based. You progress through levels with a bit more of a backtracking sort of mentally ("oh I've got to do that again do'h"). That happens in DS too but Demon's isn't an open world so it can feel more like you're repeating the same level many times whereas DS lets you go off in different directions and grind a bit if you get bored, try out different weapons etc. Demon's does have exploration but the level structure just makes it a bit more direct and "ah I've beaten that level". Demons you travel through the same areas many times. I guess you're less likely to get lost in Demon's but more likely to get fed up, whereas the ominous lab rat setting of Dark Souls gives you more to discover at your own pace. I still enjoyed playing the same area for about 5 hours just git gud.

Both are tortuously hard but extremely rewarding.

Never completed dark, but would still say dark due to the fact that it feels like one big adventure and has better environments and enemies. Dark souls 2 lacked a lot of the prequels originality and was clearly made by a lesser team as displayed by miyazakis genius in bloodborne.

On the whole, they really are shining lights in this era of unfinished, average games, so for that from software should be respected.

The one area the series needs to improve is in the graphics department, so i am looking forward to how dark souls 3 will look on ps4.
