Describe your first Uni week

I know nothing about it and I'm heading up Sunday week, I'm told the first week is free and people go mental. I don't plan on drinking much either (combination of and working on my physique atm), but will on the big nights. All I know going is three friends.

I only knew one guy who was doing a completely different degree. You'll be fine.

Neither do I. The fact that I don't drink might make settling in harder as well. ¬_¬

You know, that is a genuine concern, which is why I'm worried if I have to drink the place dry for the first week. What I do know however that once things settle down, I'm doing it my way.

BTW - I was hoping for this thread to be full of experienced people going "Yeah I downed X amount in two minutes!" and gooseberry fool.

I assume you mean College as in Uni from what you said about not drinking much...

Mine was pretty awful, drove down with my parents and set up my room. Only knew one person from my college who was going to the same Uni and met up with him after my parents had gone, had a few drinks in the SU Bar on Campus. Then went out for the freshers night piss-up at the bar/club on campus and it was a fairly gooseberry fool night, just a rubbish club-room. This stunning girl tried it on with me and I rejected her cos I had a g/f at the time - Regret it to this day :fp:

After that went back to halls and met a few people I lived with properly after they'd come in from the club.

Over the next few days was practically stalked by the lad I'd known from college and realised he was actually a really annoying bastard, discovered half the people I lived with were actually quite irritating - Had one really awesome night out in Liverpool but other than that the whole week was pretty uneventful. I only lasted until Christmas - sure you're experience will be much beter though

First week of uni consisted of getting to know my new flatmates and exploring Falmouth, whilst getting to know the pubs in the area. I also went to as many of the freshers' events as I could and met as many new people as I could.

Simply put, it was the best week of my life.

Most people will drink a lot. Timidly.

One of the best weeks of my life. I drank myself silly pretty much every waking hour and had crazy amounts of fun. I didn't know anyone going and simply jumped in and made eighty-gazillion friends within about ten minutes. Don't worry about it, everyone will be feeling the same and just wants to make friends.

Day 1 - Arrived in halls of residence and got set up. Said hello to my neighbour and had a chat before we both went down to dinner together, we talked, he seemed like a nice chap. In the evening there was an introductory hello for everyone in our halls complex (about 300 new students) we had a talk from the steward and then everyone went to the halls bar. It was packed, hot, everyone seemed to be getting along and I felt incredibly out of place. This was the one and only night of uni I seriously thought about going home, ridiculous right. I just found it so intimidating, I was already planning my phone call home. Anyway, me and this other guy met up with the rest of the people staying in our section of the halls and we talked for the rest of the night, I felt much better and went to sleep a happy chappy.

I won't do the rest of the week because it basically consisted of doing admin stuff on campus during the day and going out to clubs at night (I had never gone to a club or had more than a small tipple to drink before going to uni). I quickly settled in and thoroughly enjoyed most of the week.
If you want some advice I'ld reccomend trying not to get to overwhelmed, it's a cliché I know but although it's scary everyone is in the same boat. Try and make lots of friends even if you're just going up to strangers and saying hi (I know this sounds stupid but it's something I didn't do and regretted for the rest of my time at uni) the first few weeks will be the time when you make the most friends at uni. After this introductory period it kind of stops being ok to just walk up to strangers and saying 'hi wanna be friends'.

So many people claim that their first week of uni was the best week of their life. I was getting pretty worried when I'd been there a couple of days and definitely was not having a good time. I was terribly homesick and found everything completely overwhelming. Fortunately, I stuck with it and I'd have really regretted it if I'd given up. The chances are you'll have a great time - it really is fantastic being able to go up to anyone and just start a conversation, as Herb says. Something quite unique to this period of time. But, if you do happen to feel a bit intimidated by it all, you shouldn't worry in the slightest. You won't be the first person to feel that way. I think that there's enormous pressure to have the most incredible time but it's only natural for the whole situation to come as a bit of a shock to the system. Whatever happens, remember that it's scary for everyone and just persevere. You'll be glad you did.

I knew no one going to my Uni when I first went, but as long as you keep an open mind and talk to anyone and everyone you'll be fine. The first night at Uni was probably the best night I ever had, went SU Bar, then to a flat party, then clubbing. Amazing.

My advice is just enjoy it - you only live once.

You start so soon. I don't go untill mid October. I think my Fresher's week or what they've called it Welcome Week is during the first teaching week of term? Is this usual?

You'll be fine Crop. So from uni I've only talked to two people: one on here and the other on Facebook. You'll have plenty of time to get to know people during Fresher's week and while you're staying in the halls. If you know a couple people already then it's an added bonus.

No doubt I'll be bricking in it when uni starts in about 4 weeks time (gooseberry fool so soon) and will be asking you for advice.

Drinks and Sex 8-)

In general just "go for it". Be talkative, chatty, say hello to everyone/anyone. Go to any events/freshers fairs/clubs you like.

A lot of people will feel like Herb - that everyone else is mingling better/chatting more/fitting in better...it's normal.

Everyone's really pissed scared and in the same boat. Just relax and have fun.
