Just played it through to the end twice.

- It's strawberry floating gorgeous
- It's pretty much Heavy Rain HD, which...isn't great.
- It's terribly, terribly written.

The demo is the hostage scene we saw in early videos and, although it's very pretty it's utterly hollow. The first half is spent gathering evidence which means walking around a single room on a treasure hunt, pressing or holding buttons where needed. The second is the negotiation stage where you have more or fewer options based on your scavenger hunt.

The first half is dull, if incredibly slick and polished, but it's the second section that really shows the game's potential flaws. The characters are cliched and boring, and the dialogue is screamingly awful. It's cliche after cliche, "I wanna(sic) car!" "Please, I'm begging you!" etc etc and my first ending wrapped up with the perp literally stating "I trust you."

Even with this one scene it's extremely apparent that Cage simply doesn't possess the nuance or talent to deal with the sort of themes he's playing with. It wasn't terrible to play, and the graphics really are something, but I am not dissuaded from the high possibility this is going to be the equivalent of Michael Bay remaking 12 Years a Slave.

So you're saying it's a David Cage game?

I'm shocked. Shocked!

What Cage needs is a team of skilled writers who can actually deliver his "vision". Unfortunately his ego, combined with his misplaced self belief as a highly talented writer, won't allow it.

Both were extremely well received at the time, Heavy Rain especially; I feel there's a lot of rewriting of history going on.

It's the in-thing now to say 'David Cage was always gooseberry fool' when in reality only Beyond was a disappointment. You're only as good as your last game/film rings true here.

I don't think revisiting games is rewriting history really. Look at BioShock Infinite: tons of GOTY awards on release, now it's seen as the runt of the BioShock litter by most (not to mention having some extremely dodgy race politics).

Looking forward to seeing the meltdown from the morons on twitter and the perpetually offended when this releases. I can already picture the articles from the DM and the Graun.

If the game is as ham handed as it looks like it's going to be, there's likely to be two sets of backlashes: one from the likes of Waypoint and the Guardian taking umbrage with the total mishandling of sensitive topics, and the arrogance of Cage for trying to tackle them in the first place, and the other from the non-games press with their disgust that something as puerile as a game includes child abuse in any fashion.

I tried the demo and I thought it was not bad.

The graphics are pretty incredible though.

I liked the demo. Can see me picking this up at some point but not imminently due to current backlog

Looked amazing graphics-wise on the Pro on a 4k TV too

I think Taf is being harsh here. The writing maybe unoriginal or some what generic but to say it's terrible, terrible is over stating things. It's passable, look at other games historically, if you want examples of terrible, terrible writing.

I played through the demo a few times and really enjoyed it. I really don't think it's as badly written as you are making out.

Certainly FAR better written than Heavy Rain (although granted that had some really appalling dialogue at times).

I know you've been critical of David Cage in the past - do you think maybe you went in intending to hate the game?

My history with Cage is that I loved Indigo Prophecy and watched from afar as Heavy Rain and Two Souls hit. My opinion of him is that the gaming world, especially relating to narratives and storytelling, has moved on and he has not. He still wants to be making movies, not games, and though games in the past often sought to ape the narrative structure of film they have since carved their own style of storytelling whilst Cage remains fixated on being an auteur. Then it was revealed his company was a misogynistic and abusive shithole of a place to work and his incredibly childish and defensive reaction tells you everything you need to know about the sort of person he is (not to mention he's now suing the reporters that wrote the story)

As for the game, I can't say I wasn't going in with low expectations. The trailers we've seen have been piss poor and, worse, do not seem to realise that the theme of human bondage is not a black and white issue (definitely no pun intended). Remember the first gameplay trailer where the option at the end was 'do some light Android Freedom graffiti" or "kill a cop"? Or the trailer where you either let a child die at her father's hand or shoot the strawberry floater?

I stand by my impression of the demo. It's graphically stunning but the gameplay is 2010 levels of dull and the script is just terrible. There's no subtlety and no nuance in a situation where both are desperately required. The kidnapper literally states how he is feeling, when he feels it: "I trust you!" "You're lying!" etc etc. The only other character in the demo is the belligerent cop who doesn't trust the new guy, from every police movie ever. The character work, in a game ostensibly all about characters, is piss poor and like something a first year English student might produce for a creative writing class. It screams first draft.

Erm, they are androids, so perhaps it's not much of a stretch to say that they would lack nuance in their thoughts and words. It sounds like I'm making excuses for the game, but I feel it's a legitimate point to make.

The subtitle is Become Human, so I'm imagining a central theme will be what separates humans from androids, and can a machine really be a person - essentially using androids to explore what it means to be human. At least that's the genre staple.

If the androids are all lacking nuance in their thoughts and words then those questions aren't quite so pertinent.

Yup. As a writer you can, and absolutely should, demonstrate a character's childlike lack of nuance...with nuance. Look at AI: Artificial Intelligence for example. When Gigolo Joe finds the dead body of a client he doesn't turn to the camera and state "I'm scared" which is almost exactly what the kidnapper does in this demo.

Also, the (human) police captain does exactly the same. He doesn't trust the negotiator and just straight up states this.

I would disagree with that, these androids are childlike in the emotions and related responses. Such feelings are at the naceient stage and lack depth. It is "become" human after all.

I'm sorry mate, but children routinely state the basic emotions thar they are feeling

What? I realise my nephew isn't, my point is that a child will often say: I'm sad, I'm happy, I don't believe you, I'm scared. To have an android with similarly undeveloped emotional responses, isn't unreasonable in my view.
