I thought all three endings in the first Deus Ex game were excellent, and had cool cutscenes to go with it. Of course as Karl would agree, merging with Helios is the best ending.
Agreed. The problem with Human Revolution's endings for me wasn't really the button presses - though they didn't help! - it was the fact that they all felt really similar. In Deus Ex, the ending you chose fundamentally changed the system of governance of the entire planet: you could send us back to the stone age, forward to a sci-fi utopia, or take command of a cyberpunk dystopia. That's pretty cool! In Human Revolution you got to slightly edit a TV news broadcast. It just felt lame by comparison.
Don't get me wrong, though! I liked Human Revolution for what it was and it certainly wasn't Invisible War levels of stink. It had some cool cyberpunk ideas: the Eliza Cassan thing in particular was neat, and I also liked the idea behind Hyron even if the zombies were a chore. It also had some complex bits although the quest branches were a bit Mass Effect morality-wheel compared with the original - saying that, I don't think anything else would fly nowadays so I don't begrudge the game it. Saving Malik was genius and a nice nod to the original.
The main thing they need to avoid going forward is over-simplification. Invisible War was trash because it had an obvious plot, simple gameplay and thoughtless level design. If they keep on at least trying for high-brow then that's OK with me.
