PostDev kits and console development.

I know we have a few people on here who have been in or are part of games development so I was curious about how dev kits are made and how close they are to the final retail units?
Let's say the PS5 is set for Q4 2020 when would you expect the dev kits to start shipping and are the first units just modified PC's which just have a rough guess of what the manufacturer thinks will be possible? How late into the process would a final build dev kit for a Q4 2020 console as I'm assuming they must have a fair but of time after specs lockdown so they can send it to manufacturers. Would that 2020 console be set in 2019? Do they leave wiggle room to react to the opposition like being able to add more ram or make some components work slightly harder?

Have kits ever gone though vast revisions when a manufacturer has realised they have underestimated the competition or found the hardware they first wanted was actually quite gooseberry fool?

I actually think a Switch 2 will see the light of day fairly soon.
The deal they made with AMD seemed to suggest they will just be making upgrades based on the Switch platform so I don't think a new model every 3 years is that unthinkable as long as they have backwards compatibility from the switch onwards.
Maybe they could adopt the same style as blue ray disks where you get the blue ray and dvd in the same case or just have a switch 2 patch available at launch.

Some Switch publishers can't even get one complete game in a case, Peter, let alone two of 'em  ;) .

I'm excited about the future of our hobby.
Why do you find that so terrible?
