Development
Devil's Third is the first title to be created by Valhalla Game Studios, the developer setup by Tomonobu Itagaki who was the lead designer of the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden series. The game was initiated in 2010 and was due to be published by the now defunct publisher THQ. Itagaki's Valhalla obtained the creative ownership of the game and he then invited programmers from Team Ninja to join him in continuing development of the game. Nintendo stepped in to gain publishing rights for the title and it was announced that the game would appear exclusively on the Wii U.

Background
"From the creative mind of legendary designer Tomonobu Itagaki comes Devil's Third, an over-the-top, third-person action shooter that combines modern military weaponry with ninja-style swordplay and melee combat. It has a unique vision for a deep and challenging online mode that blends clan-based action, resource management and strategy."

Haven't the vast majority of previews about this game been overwhelmingly negative?

I'm not aware of any negativity, HSH. Previews have been thin on the ground; I haven't read many hands-on gameplay thoughts. The previews linked above paint quite a positive picture.

The game has had a protracated development history (the game started out as an Xbox 360 and PS3 title prior to THQ falling and Nintendo stepping in) and work has been continuing for four years now. Apparently Valhalla claim to have taken big strides with the game even since E3, and Nintendo have been supportive with ideas which is a huge bonus - think how the recent titles Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta were improved by this close partnership approach.

I'm keen to keep a close eye on further news.

Could have sworn that I'd heard bad things about this, but can't seem to find anything at the moment.

Bayonetta and Hyrule Warriors are both very different propositions to this though, both are built on existing gameplay mechanics and franchises. Devil's Third is something new.

People were really negative about the framerate. But hey, it's work in progress.

Really looking forward to this. I've always enjoyed Itagaki's stuff. I have concerns, because of the tumultuous development, but at the very least I expect it to be fun, if frustrating, but ultimately rewarding.

I'm a little concerned this will destroy jawafour though, to be honest. :P If previous games led by Itagaki are anything to go by, which they might not be.

The game is still being developed, and it sounds promising:

Tomonobu Itagaki, head of Valhalla Game Studios, wrote:
Hey gamers gathering here.

I know you guys are craving for the latest information on Devil's Third. Devil's Third isn't a simple shooter, but an unprecedented massive shooter to be played by tons of players. So there's many things to set before we release it. The game contains a lot of elements well over the volume to be provided by two regular games.

This game will be the biggest game of life for me and my colleagues, including you guys, not to mention.

It took two years for the concept working and four years for the development. It's not surprising at all. Such amount of time is needed to create a totally new game from scratch. I'm sure you'll dig what I mean if I say we spent four years to develop Ninja Gaiden.

But, I know your mind. Such development matters have nothing to do with gamers. So I and all the members of Valhalla really appreciate that you guys have waited for Devil's Third for a long time.

What Devil's Third is?

Such announcement will be made over time. Thanks for your patiense. Devil's Third will meet you guys' expectation for sure!

Thanks again from the bottom of my heart.

The game is due to be released during 2015. Although the protracted development period should normally stand as a warning, this game seems to pack in a lot of new ideas and action so I remain optimistic.

I mentioned Devil's Third in the E3 Nintendo thread yesterday... and today a release date has been announced :o . It's arriving on 28 August in UK / Europe and a Japanese video with Itagaki has been released. The ten-minute vid suggests that the game remains as off-beat and violent as in earlier builds; there is certainly nothing else to compare it to on the U.

Now this will probably sell around fifteen copies but I'm intrigued. The game appears to have many modes and includes a surprising amount of depth; I hope that we can learn more from an English translation of the video.

Hopefully see some stuff at E3 from it, especially as it's so close to release...

Or it'll get delayed...

Interesting multiplayer modes, but as you say, there may be about 10 people playing it anyway.

Great news about the release date soon. Shame that it's being released so close to Metal Gear Solid 5 [PERSEVERING FACE]

It looks great, which is surprising given how terrible it looked last year. I hope there's a good deal of depth in the combat.

I've been saying since E3 I thought NoA had dropped it due to it looking terrible, and Unseen64 pretty much say that is what's going on:

Still a rumour at this point. I'm still interested in more impressions of this. I think it looks interesting and with Itagaki involved, it could be amazing or gooseberry fool. Review code is apparently already out there. Nintendolife will be posting a preview soon.

I've had this on pre-order for a year now... I still want to believe that it's gonna be good. I liked the look of the footage we saw at E3 last year, and the brief vid issued earlier this year, but it does seem to have been through developmental hell.
