It's the kind of ending you'd expect a 14 year old to write.

Sounds about right for the current Dexter writers.

I can't believe how awful that was. 20 minutes from the end and there was still no reason to give a gooseberry fool about anything that happened.

The ending. Oh my god, the ending

It's insane that they filmed that final scene and soomebody effectively went

"That's the shot, we've got our finale."

Just watched the finale, and read the (as it turns out, inaccurate) spoilers. The latter, as stupid though it may have sounded, would have made for a more satisfying finale than what we got.

As it happens, I think some of the ideas in the finale were fine, it was just ruined once again by utterly ham-fisted execution, and the coda was just laughably terrible.

I almost found Deb dying quite moving, if only thanks to Hall's and Carpenter's performances (mainly the latter, because half the time Hall's 'upset' face makes him look like he badly needs a gooseberry fool). But the script ruined any chance of these scenes being as affecting as they should have been. It was beyond ludicrous that Deb ended up apologising to Dexter for him missing his flight, and basically absolved him of all guilt and told him to have a happy life. Now that could possibly tie in with the whole karmic balance idea which was posited by Quinn in the ambulance, and that was Deb being a hero to give Dexter a happy future, but instead it felt like the writers removing the one tie Dexter had to Miami, the one last obstacle to him having a happy life with Hannah and Harrison.

Then you have Harrison whispering "I love Hannah" to Dexter, which is basically his sole excuse for faking his own death and leaving his son to grow up with a serial killer. There's been literally nothing leading up to this that suggests Hannah would be happy raising Harrison on her own (over the course of this season she's turned from an intelligent killer with a strong survival instinct to a wallflower; witness the way she's absolutely fine going ahead with Harrison and not being even slightly worried that Dexter might come to any harm while still chasing Saxton) nor that Dexter would be happy to have that happen. Another example of a stupid contrivance making Dexter's path clear.

Of course Deb was going to die after the doctor said she'd be okay, but again, she had to die on Dexter's terms. She couldn't just die outright, she had to have a stroke which ensured Dexter could say goodbye to her in his own way. Quite apart from that, having Deb die and making him realise that he destroys the lives of those he cares about is just a carbon copy of what happened at the end of Season Four. A subject the writers could have explored in a meaningful way had they not decided to hit the reset button.

Saxon's death was rushed and anticlimactic. Then Batista and Quinn watch the footage, with Dexter quite clearly showing the calm and unerring accuracy of a practiced killer, and despite that - and let's not forget that Quinn's had his suspicions about Dexter before - they're both absolutely fine with it. Hey sure, bro, you get your flight. We'll sort out the fact that you killed a serial murder suspect in police custody, for which of course there will be no consequences whatsoever. (Incidentally, Quinn screaming at Saxon in the interrogation room felt to me like the sole truthful moment in that episode and perhaps demonstrated how much Desmond Harrington has been wasted in this show.)

But perhaps the most forehead-slappingly terrible thing about the whole episode was the apparent blindness of everyone in Miami. Saxon's walking around dripping blood everywhere with a gun in his hand and NO-ONE NOTICES. Hannah stabs a guy in the leg with a syringe on a coach while loudly announcing what she's just done and NO-ONE NOTICES. Dexter carries Deb's body out of the hospital, down the steps and onto his boat and NO-ONE NOTICES. And that's ignoring the fact that for an entire season an escaped serial killer has refused to change a single thing about her appearance and NO-ONE strawberry floating NOTICES.

In short, the worst season finale since the first season of The Killing (US version) and an absolute travesty of a way to end a show.

I too did this. Quinn re-enacting the very first scene of the show (Dexter driving around at night time saying "Tonight is the night") would have killed me.

Quote from the showrunner in an interview about the finale.

Have to ask: How did Dex get from his boat to the shore in the middle of a hurricane?
BUCK: Hopefully it’s not a question that will be examined too closely. The show has always been a half step away from reality.

No gooseberry fool.

EDIT: Oh, Christ.

The show started out in such a different place. The first season, the level of reality was more suspended. We felt like we were gradually making it more real. Michael always said about the ending, ‘Let’s make it real, let’s deal with it more realistically.’

The fact that his boat is right there at the hospital in the first place is pretty ludicrous.

Also, did anyone else notice that baby Harrison in the flashback was very obviously a plastic doll?

Original showrunner has revealed what he had planned for the ending. This guy left after season 4 so is probably the reason it started out good.

The Showtime drama drew to a close last night (September 22) with Dexter (Michael C Hall) faking his death and starting a new life, but Phillips told E! Online that he had a different ending in mind when he ran the show.

"In the very last scene of the series, Dexter wakes up," Phillips explained. "And everybody is going to think, 'Oh, it was a dream', and then the camera pulls back and back and back and then we realise, 'No, it's not a dream'.

"Dexter's opening his eyes and he's on the execution table at the Florida Penitentiary. They're just starting to administer the drugs and he looks out through the window to the observation gallery, and in the gallery are all the people that Dexter killed."

Phillips revealed that many of Dexter's direct and indirect victims - including the Trinity Killer (John Lithgow), Doakes (Erik King) and LaGuerta - would all return to haunt him.

"Everything we've seen over the past eight seasons has happened in the several seconds from the time they start Dexter's execution to the time they finish the execution and he dies," he said.

"Literally, his life flashed before his eyes as he was about to die. I think it would have been a great, epic, very satisfying conclusion."

However, Phillips - who left Dexter after season four - added that he thought the current production team "did a good job with the final episode".

"I chose not to stay with the show, and so everybody did what they did, and I had no problem with that," he insisted.

I dunno, that sounds quite cheap and obvious. I don't think the *concept* for the actual ending is so terrible because it ends up with Dexter being punished for what he's done in quite a devastating way - he's lost everyone close to him (Deb permanently) and ends up in a self-imposed exile so he can't hurt anyone. Thinking about it, as badly botched as it was, what we got is surely better than the potentially happy ending of him ending up with Harrison and Hannah in Argentina with absolutely no repercussions at all (an outcome I feared throughout the finale). Him being either caught and sent to the chair or killed by another person would arguably have been too trite and simplistic, certainly with the way this current team have handled things. That's perhaps the most obvious way to end a series like Dexter.

Incidentally, it seems that the series was brought forward several months at Showtime's behest, and that may have contributed towards the last season being rushed. I certainly don't absolve Buck of the blame, but perhaps with a few more months it wouldn't have felt quite so disjointed and hurried as a result.

There's a great article from last week here about all the people involved with the show and how untalented most of them are.

http://www.uproxx.com/tv/2013/09/naming ... z2f6Qlvjg2

These are 3 of the 5 writers of the show.

Jace Richdale has been a television writer for 20 years, mostly for (bad) comedies, like Cavemen. He shouldn’t have even had a seat at the writers’ table.

Jennifer Yale’s only previous experience as a writer was as the head writer of Harper’s Globe, a web series designed to complement the quickly cancelled and very bad Harper’s Island. She has also written an episode of Jakers! The Adventures of Piggley Winks. She is a staff writer on Dexter brought in for the final season. Her name is on every episode of Dexter this season.

Why would Showtime entrust their highest-rated, most acclaimed series to Scott Buck, a guy who wrote Tremors 4: The Legend Begins is a complete mystery to me. He, however, is clearly bad at his job, and should’ve been fired after season six.

Good lord.

No, pretty much the whole backroom staff changed after season 4 bar one or two people. Most importantly, the original creator, showrunner and director of photography left.
