Did you learn a language at school? Do you use it?

I did GCSE French and I could survive for a couple of hours in France if I needed to.

I did GCSE French and was actually pretty good at it, passing easily despite never really buckling down during the lessons. Sadly, I've forgotten the majority of it, as I've not been back to France in a very long time. I think the last time I used it was in Morocco, but even then everyone just wanted to speak English. I also learned Spanish at GCSE, but the quality of teaching was poor, so it never really stuck. I've been relearning it in my own time, though, as I went to S. America earlier in the year, and it was certainly needed there. I am far better at it now than when I was actually "taught" it.

I think Spanish should be the default language you learn in school rather than French, as clearly it is a far more useful language to learn. Had I known I'd end up living in Germany I would have taken that too.

Define learn. I studied German and French didn't really learn much.

French and German for me at GCSE and, beyond the ability to say a few pleasantries, I don't use it much. I find I lack confidence to speak either but seem to have retained a decent amount of vocab which makes reading the languages easier when I'm there.

Currently learning Spanish through Duolingo, same situation there, my reading skill far outweighs my speaking skills, probably due to less practise and confidence.

I "learnt" French but never used it and never took it seriously. I am now trying to learn some Italian which I do plan to visit quite a few more times in the coming years.
