Boy, does that sound like a Labour policy.

I am stunned that isn’t already the case.

I don’t think it’ll make much difference to those that own second homes though. It’ll be annoying, but if they can afford to own more than one property then I am sure they can afford the council tax on the empty one.

Don't most councils already offer no council tax discounts for empty properties now?
Or is this that an empty property will be subject to 200% Council tax rather than just 100%?

A premium means additional to doesn't it, so it would mean you pay double.

That makes more sense, I was appalled at the idea that people had second homes and didn’t have to pay council tax on them.

£300k stamp duty threshold for first time buyers is a good policy as well. It doesn’t make homes much more affordable for first time buyers, but at least helps a little.

I'm in the process of buying a house but won't complete for another fortnight (approximately), it says the stamp duty change is immediate and I haven't paid it yet so would I be right to assume that I'll no longer have to pay it? If so, result!

Sadly the duty still applies to you specifically.

Wonder how they'll define empty.

I'm looking at buying a second property next year, but whilst it's not going to be 'empty' it won't be rented out either. It'll be a place closer to work for me to live in when I'm on shift (Since my diesel costs each month are essentially the cost of a mortgage), then I'll come back to my main home on my days off and when I take time off work. I think 'second home' falls under a different category to 'empty home' though doesn't it?

I don’t know how it’ll work but I’d have no problem with them charging you a lot more in council tax for owning two properties. People struggle to buy one place, you’re not getting much sympathy for wanting to buy an extra place just to chill out in during the week.

She just said on BBC that in the OBR book they expect it to fund only 3000 new purchases.

The stamp duty change seems like the headline-grabber, but for most first-time buyers it's a mere 1% reduction in overall cost.

We simply need more genuinely affordable houses for first time buyers, not the Conservative or London definition of affordable either. These little changes barely make a dent in the overall problem, if they help at all.

I'm saving for my first home and it's a strawberry floating farce. I'll be lucky to be able to afford something 150k or more so it doesn't really make a bit of difference.

Dude at work is probably going to be hit by this, he finished buying his first place 6 months ago and hasn't gotten round to moving in yet.

Are you talking about stamp duty or council tax?

If it’s the council tax, then missing out on a stamp duty change is a shame, but it can’t be helped.

If it is the council tax changes, then the silly prick should hurry up and move in. Why has he not moved in? If he is still living with his parents then I am sure he can get around this (just say you live there!). If he still owns/rents a place then tough gooseberry fool, he can obviously afford a rise in council tax.

Council tax, sorry. He lives with his now wife's parents rather than in the house they both own.

As long as you don’t own anywhere else, then I am sure it would be simple enough to say that you do live there and you are just staying with the in-laws on a long term visit.

Edit: By "you" I obviously mean "him".
