Rupert Murdoch’s proposed £11.7bn takeover of Sky by 21st Century Fox has been dealt a blow after the government said it intended to call in the competition authorities for a further six-month examination of the deal.

Karen Bradley, the culture secretary, announced the decision in the House of Commons after considering an investigation into the takeover by the media watchdog, Ofcom.

She told MPs that she was minded to submit proposed takeover to a further 24-week inquiry by the Competition and Markets Authority on the grounds of media plurality following a recommendation by the communications regulator.

The minister said that Ofcom’s report concluded that the deal might increase the Murdochs’ ability to “influence the overall news agenda and their ability to influence the political process and it may also result in the perception of increased influence”.

Worth mentioning in case it hasn't already been. NI executive have to have an agreement in place by 4pm today to continue or we face a possibility of Direct rule.

I really wish that Labour would actually support free market access and freedom of movement, and also, that the leader who spent his career rebelling from the back benches, wouldn't throw a hissy fit every time other people do the same. Labour unity goes both ways.

What would be amazing is for Corbyn to let the conference decide the party's stance on Brexit like the issue surrounding Trident renewal.

Can you even renationalise industries whilst in the EU on the scale Corbyn wants? My understanding is it is forbidden under state aid rules that the EU has set up. It's often the far left argument that the EU is too pro free markets.

Would people be okay with the Canadian deal? Something like 98% of trade is tariff free without needing to pay any fees or have freedom of movement or restrictions on free trade deals with non EU states.
