A snap election would signal another Tory U-turn. While the public generally back May by a massive margin, there is no appitite at all for an election. Poll fatigue at this point.

A resignation, more uncertainty, with no obvious or decent replacement.

Both would be eye-rollers.

I don't imagine it is an election, I can't see her getting the backing of enough MPs for it.

An election would a a good move politically as it is hard to imagine polls getting much better for the Cons than now and they will probably get worse if anything over time, however it is really bad on a government level because the Brexit clock is ticking and it would be a very large and unwelcome distraction. Not to mention that if they start making election promises now it could hamstring negotiations with the EU throughout the entire process.

Surely she can't call a General Election just after triggering article 50. Also it seems cowardly to quit at this point, but I guess if her health is bad, maybe she is quitting.

Wouldn't there have to be a vote in parliament to call a early GE.

Is there really any point? May won't lose, Labour will probably lose a fair few seats and Lib Dems might recover some ground. I guess the only benefit to the Tories is that it puts some distance between the point of Brexit and the next election which might give them time to paper over the cracks.

That's exactly what I thought. The Tories would win in 2020 so it would be great to get that over with early and hope that Labour can get an effective leader in place to combat them over the next 5 years.
