Private companies can choose what newspapers they offer to customers.

They already do though don't they? (In as much they decide what titles to offer in their shop/train service)

There was already a shortlist of what's available...the DM have a problem with that concept now they're not on it.

They aren’t.

If Virgin trains banned possession of the DM then you’d have a point. All they have done is stop supplying it.

I would agree with you, Moggy, were it not for the words that Virgin Trains used in their staff update:

Drew McMillan, head of colleague communication and engagement at Virgin wrote:Thousands of people choose to read the Daily Mail every day. But they will no longer be reading it courtesy of VT.

"There's been considerable concern raised by colleagues about the Mail's editorial position on issues such as immigration, LGBT rights and unemployment.

I'm intrigued as to what Virgin Trains feels the Daily Mail's position is on LGBT rights and unemployment is; what has made them think that their customers should not be able to buy the Mail on Virgin Trains because of it?

If Virgin Trains simply switched their newspaper availability from, say, the Mail to the Mirror then fair enough. The additional comms and choice of wording seems a little "we know better than you do", though.

Don't get me wrong - I am not sticking up for the Daily Mail - but I am apprehensive about a major UK company being so vocal about what political opinions they feel their customers should and shouldn't read about.

FAKE EDIT: Preezy and Hexx, I have hopefully rsponded to your points with this reply, too?

They're being vocal about what political opinions, particularly hate filled and misleading ones, they're willing to support as a company. The Mail is an intolerable, shameful rag and I'm glad more are vocal about questioning the support it receives from more neutral entities.

I don't necessarily agree with some news stories that the Mail prints; then again, I could say that about any of the national newspapers. Personally I am not a fan of The Sun, the most popular newspaper in the UK - but I wouldn't feel comfortable thinking that it shouldn't be available. Are any of the UK national papers really shameful, or do they just publish some stories that we don't agree with? It's quite unusual for a major company to be so publically vocal about this.

strawberry float sake Jawa, the Mail is a hate filled gooseberry fool of a paper that is legally just this side of bigotted and racist.

I know you like to find a comfy spot on a fence but I honest to Christ don't understand how you can do it for the strawberry floating mail!

Jawa I am still not sure of your point? The Virgin statement says that people will not read it courtesy of VT, not that they are banning people reading it or locking people up for possessing a copy.

VT are under no obligation to sell or supply the DM. It’s a complete non-issue unless you support businesses being forced to stock and sell certain publications.

The DM is a hate filled rag. You say that you “don't necessarily agree with some news stories that the Mail prints” as if the Mail is usually a lovely paper that sometimes steps out of line.

I've flitted around a number of newspapers at various times over the years and I reckon I've read things that I haven't agreed with in all of them. And they do this deliberately... this is one of their selling points! People will be bored by (or, rather, not inclined to purchase) a stream of good news and consensus, which is why some columnists in every paper are provocative.

Personally I wouldn't describe the Mail as being a racist newspaper. Again, there are some stories and reports that I dislike but, overall, no more so than with most papers. It is, off course on the "right" side of politics (as most of the national UK papers are) and it riles me sometimes... but not enough for me to think that I should tell people not to read it.

Oh, and as for the "fence-sitter" name - I just have an open mind and am not one to immediately try and close down something that I may not agree with.

It's not just commentators in the daily mail they plaster the front page with untrue stories about Muslims and minorities. They have run a number of articles this year that just stir up hated in this country.

When The Guardian goes too far, it prints amusing comment pieces about how kale is the most feminist food.

Then The Mail goes too far, it 'informs' its baying readers that the country could be safe and prosperous again if only it weren't for those terrible Muslims.

"All newspapers do it" is madness when the rhetoric and consequences are so different.

I am 100% comfortable with the idea of The Sun not being available for purchase. Should newsagents in Liverpool be forced to reverse a boycott of that specific newspaper over the coverage of Hillsborough because they are deciding what their patrons should or should not be able to purchase in their shops?

The nasty right wing written press (specifically The Sun, The Mail, and The Express) are shameful newspapers. Their stances are not ones to merely disagree with when they outright attack people of colour, immigrants, women, disabled, poverty stricken, non-Christian and LGBT people and their rights. A major problem with a significant portion of society is an inability to empathise with attacks on minority people because they are not directly negatively affected by such attacks. A huge part of this has been driven by right leaning media and it is something that makes me genuinely ashamed to be British. I consider The Mail a poisonous publication that takes advantage of the insecurities of an otherwise decent majority population to direct misery upon a minority of people.

It is not disagreeable, it is dangerous.

The Mail has been deflecting blame away from the government for years, and putting it on groups that really don't deserve the vitriol thrown at them. It breeds hate and is a complete detriment to the progress we should be making as a society. I'm glad Virgin had decided to do this.
