55p a minute. Out of touch banana splits.

At least they are getting rid of it, but what a stupid thing to do in the first place.

I fully expect the 55p a minute phone line to be replaced with a £1 a minute one though. ;)

It's quite rare that common sense prevails. It feels good :datass:

Why did they abstain instead of supporting their own policy? :?

The vote was for pausing the rollout of universal credit and fix the many issues issues with it. Another common sense move that the Tories won't agree with because it would mean admitting Corbyn is right twice in one day (after their U-turn on the helpline fees).

Such a pathetic government.

John Bercow, the speaker, was challenged on saying the no vote lost. He said: “If you choose not to take part and vote you can’t say, ‘well we didn’t lose’”

He also seemed to pile pressure on for a response from the government.

He said:

"A minister from the government should come to the House and show respect to the institution and say what it intends to do.

This institution is bigger than any one party and is bigger than any government."

Conservative backbencher Sir Edward Leigh says he's taken part in hundreds of divisions in his time as an MP and was always under the impression that voting had "some kind of purpose".

The Commons is "not a university debating society" he says, "surely when we vote it should have some effect". He asks the Speaker to work to ensure the House of Commons is at the "centre of our national life".

It's like our government are in a competing with the Americans over who can govern with less competence.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

Fair play to Labour. I find it absurd that UC is taking at least 6 weeks to pay people. It is simply not acceptable for someone to be without money for that time. The recent kick up about this seemed to suggest that people should take out discretionary support loans to cover the living expenses within that timeframe. That is simply not good enough.

How the hell will that be enforced? Anybody that wants to speak at a university or student union has to be allowed to speak or else the university gets fined? What a great idea! Who came up with it, Boris? Oh no, worse, it was his idiot brother.

What on Earth? No-one has a 'right' to speak at some particular University. Free speech means that you won't be arrested for having a particular view, not that everyone has to listen and smile and nod when you say something stupid.

His speech is in-between the talk from the head of ISIS and the one that the Stalinist Society are holding.

Jeremy Corbyn will be in the front row for the latter.
