So it looks we're definitely going to have a referendum next year about changing the abortion laws in Ireland.
Probably ends any chance of a general election this year as well.

What's the driver behind this? making it more or less liberal?

Is it possible to make the Irish abortion laws less liberal?

I had no idea it was illegal except to save the mothers life. I'm surprised that's allowed in the EU.

How do the French get their results so quickly? Polls close at 1800hrs and some at 1900hrs but the results are expected straight away.

Currently estimated that 20% have abstained. 20% turned up to tick abstain.

I've got a bad feeling about this French election.

I'm not sure, im confident it will go to a second round and le pen will be in it but I think most voters who went for the ones that have dropped out will then go for the more central rival.

Oh I'm sure it will go to a second round. If it ends up Fillon/Le Pen though I think Le Pen could win due to a combination of left-wing apathy and Fillon's scandals.

Sunderland always get their results out quickly, it's the rest of the UK that slows everything up!

One poll suggests Le Pen hasn't made the run off but I think it's highly likely she has with Macron ahead.

After Brexit and Trump, I hope she goes out early. My nerves can't take her making the top 2. :dread:

Well the whole campaign has been run expecting her make the final two and which candidate is going to best take her on in two weeks' time.

Fillon or Melanchon getting through with her would likely be her best chance.

Macron vs Le Pen, the early results suggest.

Thank god it's not Fillon vs Le Pen.

As I understand it Le Pen has seen an increase in support from rural voters, who typically have a comparatively high turnout in France compared to urban areas.

That result is relatively close to the opinion polls for once, which is good news for Anyone But Le Pen as Macron gets over 60% of the vote against her in the latest ones.

Yeah I really can't see le pen beating macron. As a centralist he will be prefered by the left and some of those who go for a traditional right candidate.

Unless however there's a number of terrorist incidents in the next two weeks.

Yeah, all the polls (ha, polls) have him winning comfortably in the second round.

The poll appeared pretty accurate for the first round though.

I find it an odd system to have a two week gap and another round of voting. Why not simply ask people for their first, second and third choices.

I think it's a brilliant system. Wouldn't work over here as we have a two (one?) party system, but with 11 people standing this time in France, the first vote is who you want in, the second is essentially who you don't.

Wish we'd had a system like that for the EU referendum given that a huge amount of Leave voters realised they had royally strawberry floated up almost immediately.
