There is no point in leaving the EU. A "soft" Brexit isn't a great deal compared to what we have now, but it's better than the consequences of no deal.

The point of staying in the single market is to stop an economic downturn.

We have control over our borders at the moment (we are not part of Schengen) and will need immigration whether we are in or out of the EU.

Farage and his ilk spent decades telling us what a great deal Norway had, so they would be rather hypocritical to criticise us for going for that model.

To appease the thickest strawberry floating banana splits in this country, apparently. That's the only point of doing this.

No because they want control of the borders back. The middle ground of in the single market and out of the EU will appease very few people. For me if we are out of the EU but still in the single market with full movement of people then we may as well stay in the EU. I also don't think we will end up paying much less for membership in this scenario compared to EU membership either.

We DO have control of our strawberry floating borders, though. Any form of brexit is pointless and irrational. The government need to come out and tell people that they were lied to and that it would be massively irresponsible to strawberry float us all up the arse in respecting the will of the people. By people, they mean the thickest racist banana splits in this country who couldn't tell their arsehole from a hole in the ground.

We have control over our borders. We're an island that isn't part of Schengen.

The only exception to that is the Eire/Ulster border but there are some damn good reasons to keep that one open. :dread:

Plus Ireland isn't part of Schengen either so it's not like anybody can claim there's a backdoor through that route.

Imagine the alternative timeline where Ed won, Brexit referendum never happened, Balls never did Come Dance With Me, Jeremy Corbyn never became Party Leader, May never happened.

So who would be in the running for the Tory leadership?

No one's going take Bojo seriously after, well, everything he's been involved with. And please not Amber Rudd :dread:

Davis, maybe?

Philip Hammond maybe.

Ruth Davidson is popular but she's not an MP.

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/jun/16/manufacturer-of-cladding-on-grenfell-tower-identified-as-omnis-exteriors

On phone so it's a pain to copy the whole article but worth reading.

The Guardian wrote:Cladding for Grenfell Tower was cheaper, more flammable option
Exclusive: Omnis Exteriors asked to supply cladding £2 cheaper a square metre than fire-resistant type, investigation finds

In the UK there are no regulations requiring the use of fire-retardant material in cladding used on the exterior of tower blocks and schools.

But the Fire Protection Association (FPA), an industry body, has been pushing for years for the government to make it a statutory requirement for local authorities and companies to use only fire-retardant material.

Jim Glocking, technical director of the FPA, said it had “lobbied long and hard” for building regulations on the issue to be tightened, but nothing had happened.

Genuinely shocked there's no fire regulations related to cladding. Outside of food, medicine, nuclear power, I would have thought fire regulations would be some of the toughest.

Davis seems like an obvious choice. Hammond too.

Sajid Javid would be an interesting outside choice.

Although if Labour can have a Marxist Chancellor, perhaps we can have Jacob Rees-Mogg for Tories. :datass:

Amber Rudd's seat isn't a safe seat. Ruth Davidson isn't an MP and arguably no Tory Scottish seat is a safe seat and unlikely to get a safe seat in England for obvious reasons. Although would be a very interesting choice.

I'd support Grumpy David's wish for Rees-Mogg. If that happened I'd expect the Lib Dems to push the Tories into third at the next election and the Libs would only get 10 seats. :slol:

The Schengen agreement doesn't matter. The issue for a lot of people is that any person with EU citizenship can wander into the country. Most people aren't actually concerned about a Polish male who moves here to be a plumber but they are bothered about a Syrian male who claims asylum in Germany and then can move here.

Also the Irish border doesn't currently exist, it's an open border so we are reliant on Irish border control to do their investigation on any persons coming into their country.

No, people cannot just wander into the country, whether they are EU or not.

Syrian's claiming asylum in Germany cannot just move to Britain either.

Both of those are Leave lies.

I thought the asylum part was meant in a "after they acquire any form of EU nationality, they'll then leave that EU country and move to the UK"?

That's not what he said.

Sure a Syrian could travel to Germany, get approved for asylum, wait 8 years, pass the German citizenship test and then decide to move to the UK. But I'd imagine there are better ways of getting into the UK.

Yes that's exactly what i meant and it does happen because i've met a lot of people who have done this.

I'm currently working on a missing Syrian male who claimed asylum in Italy. He then moved to the UK and has now gone missing.

And people can effectively walk into our country as an EU citizen. Yes if they are known to our security services then they should be stopped at border control but if they are not then they can just wander in. No further checks will be carried up. If I want to just go to Spain i can, i don't need to tell them why i am there, i don't need to tell them when i am coming back to the UK.

Sounds fantastic, I'd be off to Italy tomorrow if I didn't have a family, mortgage, job etc..
