He's straight up admitted that he supports the Tories as they're the party who will impact least on his lifestyle with lower taxes etc. Selfishness as a deciding factor.

I doubt this will change his mind in the slightest.

Under a Labour government, he might be forced to slum it with £300 headphones. Stop thinking of yourself and think of Denny’s ears. :x

Reading through that DUP/Tory letter per the deal, am I reading into this too much? It seems like they basically admit they aren't neutral.

Pretty much. You can't be neutral when somebody has given you something as a sweetener, whether that's money, a holiday or a turkey for Christmas.

That means not only is the entire UK being cheated on for certain things in parliament getting safe passage that probably wouldn't have done otherwise, but also the DUP aren't properly representing their constituents.

And then there's the minor Good Friday Agreement issue.

Their argument appears to be that it is money for NI rather than just the DUP. So it’s not just a magic money tree, it is a totally 100% neutral magic money tree. ;)

It obviously remains to be seen how many Sinn Fein supporting areas benefit from the extra cash, but even if the money is distributed evenly, it will still be a massive point at the next elections that the DUP will be able to point to in their favour. “We gained you all an extra billion!”. And I do wonder if there were any other deals/agreements made that haven’t been revealed to the public.

The Scottish and Welsh Tory MPs must be furious that NI is getting so much extra cash when they are getting strawberry float all.

To be fair, the rest of the UK should be supporting extra investment in NI. Wages here are a third lower than in England despite workers generally being better educated, so until we get the structural investment and realise more of the north's potential we are going to keep being a drain on the UK treasury. If we can develop our infrastructure and attract more business we can pull more of our weight. Continued austerity will just lead to continued lack of progress.

The issue is whether Scotland and Wales as well as the more deprived areas of England should be betting the same investment, which IMO they should. The government should have been taking proactive measures to improve the worst performing areas of the UK seven years ago, but it would be better late than never. Unfortunately it seems the Conservative party are only motivated to invest in the public good when their own political power depends on it.

I don’t think most of the criticism, at least not from me, is that Northern Ireland is getting extra funding. It's because they are getting extra funding to keep the austerity champions in power. We should be investing in areas that need it. Why this is causing anger is because there are plenty of places in all 4 of the countries of the UK that are desperate for funding. England has deprived areas, Wales does, Scotland does. People will be looking at the extra billion and be feeling very jealous and very angry.

It’s a terrible deal for the rest of the UK and I suspect it will be a terrible deal for nationalist/Catholic areas of Northern Ireland as well.

Just imagine the right wing spluttering if Corbyn was PM and due to a deal that he made with the SNP announced an extra billion in funding for Scotland.

Ruth Davidson must be privately spitting at this point, she drags the Tories into relevance in Scotland again and then they shovel money out to NI and give her opponents an open goal.

I was about to say this in reply to Moggy. They can probably say goodbye to any of those inroads which were made in Scotland. They can throw money at a different area of the UK next time to make up the numbers lost in Scotland :shifty: In a few decades we might all be bought off for our votes :datass:

Yep, if Labour and the SNP have any sense (I am not saying they do have any ;) ) then they will use this against the Tories in Scotland. Just keep asking Ruth Davidson where Scotland's £1billion is.

Yes, everything time Scottish spending comes up just remind everyone how much easier it would be with an extra billion.

Most Tory arguments can now just be answered with either "DUP" or "£1billion".

Labour's magic money tree? £1billion!

Coalition of chaos? DUP!

Corbyn loves terrorists? DUP!

Austerity? £1billion!

Cuts to schools/hospitals/police/fire/whatever? DUP! £1billion!

Preezy, from the locked election thread wrote:I also can't believe that abortion is still illegal in Northern Ireland. It's 2017 for strawberry floats sake, what the hell is going on. Outrageous and scandalous.

I've also just discovered that:
Currently women in England and Wales have to prove to a doctor that carrying on with the pregnancy is detrimental to health or wellbeing to get permission for a termination.

Without permission, abortion is a criminal offence.

A Facebook acquaintance of mine is an actual doctor who refers to abortion as 'murdering babies,' and boasts about making it difficult for women who see him asking for an abortion to get permission ("Yes, I do think I know better than they do" was his reply when asked).

As you might expect he is a total bell-end in all other aspects of his life too.

This is abhorrent. Can you report him to the GMC for these comments?
