Mort was a strawberry floating work of art, I tell you. One of my favourite ever books. I must read it again.

Never been a fan of his stuff but it's still sad news, 66 is no age to die.

Terrible news.

Sounds like there might be one more Discworld book to be released.

First Ian Banks and now Terry Pratchett, the world seems bent on taking away my favourite authors before their time. Better be careful George Martin! :dread:

I've almost every novel he's put out and dreamed of meeting him one day at some convention or other. Now that will never happen. :(

So sad, he's such a great writer. I love the Discworld books hugely, they are just magical; funny and warm and wise.

RIP, Sir Pterry.

I called off his players' names as they came marching up the steps behind him....All nice guys. They'll finish last. Nice guys. Finish last.

So very sad.

I think I've read nearly all the main Discworlds now, missing one or two of the books for younger readers. They're very important to me. RIP Terry. :(

Sad news, never read any of the Discworld stuff but absolutely loved Truckers as a kid and he always seemed pretty awesome. Great catalogue of work to leave behind though and he'll be long remembered.

strawberry float.

I grew up reading Discworld. I'm not entirely sure I would've discovered my love for literature and gone on to do an English degree if it hadn't been for that series. For an awkward young man with a love for the stranger aspects of pop culture his books were perfect: funny, crude, clever and inventive. I can define the holidays of my youth by which Discworld I read and remember my birthdays through which book I received. It feels a bit like a family member has died if I'm being honest.

Still. "Death is not cruel, just terribly, terribly good at his job."

Bye bye Pterry.

I'm with you there. Absolutely gutted.

I was lucky enough to meet Terry Pratchett at a book signing with a mate of mine a good few years ago. He had a copy of Good Omens that Neil Gaiman had already signed with a message, specifically for the attention of Terry.

It was obviously a joke shared between the two of them and he took great pleasure in adding his own scribble. Laugh out loud doesn't quite cover it :)

Excuse my ignorance at this sad time but I never realized people could die from Alzheimer's.

I tried reading his discworld novels but couldn't get into them. I've only read Nation out of all his other books, I liked it a great deal. Very sad news anyway.

My favourite author and a damn fine man. Gutted by this news. I'll be ever thankful for the wonderful gifts he gave the world. Truly awesome and splendid man.

RIP mate.

I am also a relative newcomer to Discworld. I read The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic a few years ago and thought they were okay, but I read Small Gods last month and I loved it! I'm very much looking forward to reading Mort and Witches Abroad when I've got them out of storage.

I knew he was sick, but it's still a shame to hear the news. He was one of a very special brand of British authors (I'd count Douglas Adams in the same sort of group), and he will be greatly missed.

Absolutely outstanding last words on Twitter as well, a great and fitting sign off for a great author

It was such a sucker punch when I heard the news. The amount of my childhood and teenage years I spent in Discworld, I genuinely had to hold back a tear. :(
If you've not read any Pratchett, or you've only read one or two books, I'd heartily recommend leaping in. Here's the list I posted on Facebook, to the indifference of many:

The Unadulterated Cat:
Non-fiction. If you’ve ever owned a cat (or more accurately been owned by a cat), you should already have read this.

The Wee Free Men:
90% of the characters are Braveheart stereotypes. One is called No-As-Big-As-Medium-Jock-But-Bigger-Than-Wee-Jock Jock.

The Dark Side of the Sun:
A pre-Discworld sci-fi ripping Asmiov. In my head, the film adaptation opens with This Is Tomorrow by Bryan Ferry.

Oh, and a few Discworlds too. In no particular order: Going Postal, Making Money, spiritual predecessor The Truth, Guards Guards, Feet of Clay, Soul Music, Hogfather, Eric, The Colour of Magic, The Light Fantastic, Monstrous Regiment. Personally I started with Interesting Times, which despite being a semi-sequel to The Colour of Magic/The Light Fantastic was distinct enough to serve as a superb introduction to a bloody funny writer.

He doesn't do chapters no. But he definitely does use paragraphs.

I'd add the Witches books to the list of recommendation. So...

Equal Rites, Wyrd Sisters, Witches Abroad, Lords and Ladies, Maskerade and Carpe Jugulum. If there's more after that I've not read them. But the ones in bold I'd especially recommend. There's a definite progression of time in the Discworld books, so some of them make more sense, or at least you get the references and jokes better, if you read them in order.
