Bethesda has announced Dishonored, a new first-person stealth action adventure game.

The developer is Arkane Studios, which was bought by Bethesda parent company ZeniMax in August last year.

Harvey Smith, one of the developers of the first two Deus Ex games, is co-creative director, reveals Game Informer.

Viktor Antonov, who designed Half-Life 2's City 17, is also on board.

"Dishonored is the antithesis of a edge-of-your-seat roller-coaster ride," Game Informer said.

"It's a game about assassination where you don't have to kill anyone. It's a game about infiltration where you can set up traps and slaughter the entire garrison of an aristocrat's mansion rather than sneak in. It's a game about brutal violence where you can slip in and out of a fortified barracks with nobody ever knowing you were there. It's a game about morality and player choice where the world you create is based on your actions, not navigating conversation trees."

Surprised this has had a low key announcement as the talent onboard is enough to deserve some hype. Early days but sure is looking the part

I think this is the game that finally convinced me of the utter rubbishness of kotaku for anything other than news. Considering this RPS preview:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/08 ... preview-2/

It makes the game sound exciting, original and something genuinely unique. Now contrast this with the kotaku preview based on exactly the same demo:

http://kotaku.com/5833993/dishonored-is ... he-problem

Hmm. He makes a point of desperately trying to be positive...why? If he'd disliked it and explained why then fine. You can't please everyone. But for some reason he starts by overtly admitting he's forcing himself to be positive. Uh?

Anyway, it looks fantastic. Here's an interview with the dev team:

Harvey Smith wrote:All the time we saw testers do things we never planned. Like, the time stop power. A guy runs into a room, there are six guys – and six guys in our game is serious problem – so he stops time, then he puts an arrow in the air, an arrow in the air, an arrow in the air [air-draws a semi-circle in front of him]… Anything touching you moves at real-time, so if you bump a lamp it falls, but as soon as it’s half a second away from you it stops. So if you hit a guard, he animates but then stops. So the crossbow bolts leave you for half a second and stop, and then when time resumes all the guards die at once, they all get hit by crossbow bolts at once. And it was magical the first time we saw somebody do that. It’s just this general purpose approach to making game systems.

I can tell you crazy ones, like a guy stops time and as somebody shoots the bullet hangs in the air, then he possesses the guy, walks him around in front of the bullet, and then ejects and then when time resumes the bullet kills him. He suicided in this weird way. There’s all these crazy combinations that we had no plans for, but we trust that if we make things general purpose, the player can get creative. It’s super-cool. That’s our main thing about the game. On one level, you’re a supernatural assassin in a retro-future world, but on another level there’s a lot of variability in this game and it’s ultimately going to be your playthrough.

Typically, anything by Bethesda that isn't elder scrolls or fallout has been rubbish. I'll pass.

The lead designer on HL2 is the lead designer on this. The whole thing looks very HL2.

Example, here's an APC car from Dishonoured:

This isn't by Bethesda. Its by Arcane. Makers of the amazing Dark Messiah, and long forgotten The Crossing.

Am I the only one who hates first-person stealth...?

Dark Messiah is only £6 on Steam. Might have to give it a go.

Don't know why, but I was under the impression that the general consensus was that it wasn't very good.

It was a buggy piece of gooseberry fool for most people when it first came out, but now that that's fixed it's a very good action/adventure game. It has the best first person melee fighting ever designed, as well.

Bethesda's inability to spell brings great dishonour on their studio.

It's a shame The Crossing never saw the light of day as it sounded like a brilliant concept. This sounds good too though and I'm really liking the art direction.
