I'd say Disney was the lesser of two evils in this case. Though it's probably a close call in many areas at least Disney do some good things!

I agree that Disney slightly edge it, they are horrible but I guess at least we might get the X-Men in the MCU if they win the bidding.

Hopefully Fox/Disney will up the offer on Sky as well to keep it out of Comcasts hands.

Disney Is Near U.S. Antitrust Approval on Fox in a Blow to Comcast

Walt Disney Co. is close to winning U.S. antitrust approval for its $71 billion deal for 21st Century Fox Inc.’s entertainment assets, according to a person familiar with the matter, creating a potentially insurmountable hurdle for a rival bid from Comcast Corp.

The Justice Department is set to approve the deal in as soon as two weeks, said the person, who declined to be named because the investigation is confidential. Disney has agreed to sell some assets to address competition problems stemming from the tie-up, according to the person.

Disney and Fox agreed in the merger agreement to sell assets including Fox’s regional sports networks.

The approval could clinch Disney’s takeover of Fox amid its battle with Comcast for one of the media industry’s biggest prizes. Fox on Wednesday accepted a sweetened bid from Disney, which upped its offer following Comcast’s $65 billion bid last week. The $38-a-share price is about $10 a share higher than what Disney offered in December -- and $3 above Comcast’s bid.

How are Comcast so bloody rich?

I find it ironic that America, the land of capitalism, has allowed for such an obvious monopoly to exist that has resulted in such a monster.

It's unbelievable how the US have allowed big companies like Comcast to bribe their way to monopolising the market. I think I saw 30% of America simply don't have a choice in who their IP provider is.

Comcast aren't actually all that cash rich as they appear with these bids. They're taking out tens of billions of dollars in loans to afford it.
I think if they did purchase Fox then Comcast would be something like $160billion in debt.

Is that definitely an indication of wealth? I thought lots of companies used loans rather than spend their own money?

According to their Wikipedia entry (I know, but the data does comes from their annual report!) they had $189 billion in assets as of the end of their last financial year and nearly $70 billion in equity so I don't think they are too hard up.

Disney Wins DOJ Approval for Fox Assets
Will have to divest Fox’s regional sports networks

Walt Disney Co. has won approval from the U.S. Department of Justice in its $71.3 billion acquisition of Fox’s film and TV entertainment assets, the company announced Wednesday.

As per the terms of the approval, Disney will be required to divest Fox’s 22 regional sports networks it was set to gain in the acquisition.

“We are pleased that the DOJ concluded that, with the exception of the proposed acquisition of the Fox Sports Regional Networks, the transaction will not harm competition, and that we were able to resolve the limited potential concerns to position us to move forward with this exciting opportunity that will enable us to create even more compelling consumer experiences,” the company said in a statement.

My only worry is Comcast deciding they have more money for Sky and Fox/Disney can't or won't outbid them.

Comcast Drops Out of Bidding War With Disney for 21st Century Fox Assets

Comcast Corp. said it would bow out of its bidding war with Disney to acquire major 21st Century Fox assets, and instead focus on acquiring the European satellite TV provider Sky, likely clearing the way for Disney to take control of the Murdoch family’s Fox assets and intensify a looming battle with Netflix and other video-streamers for media-industry dominance.

“Comcast does not intend to pursue further the acquisition of the Twenty-First Century Fox assets and, instead, will focus on our recommended offer for Sky,” the company said in a statement Thursday. Disney and Fox have agreed to a $71.3 billion deal that would have the California entertainment giant take control of the bulk of Fox’s assets, including the FX and Nat Geo cable netwoks, the 20th Century Fox film studio and Fox’s stake in the video-streaming site Hulu.

Brian L. Roberts, Comcast chairman-CEO, added: “I’d like to congratulate Bob Iger and the team at Disney and commend the Murdoch family and Fox for creating such a desirable and respected company.”

So it's confirmed Disney are buy Fox and Comcast are buying Sky.

Neither wanted to buy both.

If Disney can get through the Fox deal quickly they might be able to sweep Sky out from under Comcast under Chain purchase rules.
