Ta, Winckle. I won't get to collect the game until Monday but it does look like being fun!

Barnsy! wrote:Delighted you picked this up Jawa. You have to actually play it though :capnscotty: . Hopefully you will report back how you find it.

I loved it. If it was released any year other than 2023 it would have been game of the year for me...

Barnsy, thanks, man! I probably won't play it immediately (I'm still big into F76!) but I do want to try out the platforming action.

Whoop woop!

It's a great game but seems to be quite over looked. Always happy to hear someone giving it a go.

I'm going need you guys not to remind him F76 exists for a little while :D

I played the opening half-hour earlier this evening! It has made a good first impression; it feels like care has been taken with the presentation and the platforming action - whilst nothing new - is slick and a lot of fun.

Initially I wasn't crazy about the very slight "jolt" when your character stops moving in a direction but I quickly got used to this. The controls seem accurate enough.

I think I was heading in a wrong direction at the end of the session and so I'll have to pay a little more attention when I next load it up!

Ah! I understand the map now! I made my way towards the target and have now got the wall jump. I'm enjoying the exploration and my next steps are to head for the canopy.

Which character are you playing as Jawa? I played through as Mickey and my wife as Donald. I love how the different upgrades are tailored to the characters' personalities.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

I've only tried Mickey so far... but maybe I could try a different character. I will give it a go, Winckle! I think that you can select your character at the start of each session, regardless of your game save point.

I don't think that it's an official entry in the "Illusion" franchise... but, then again, maybe it is as it's published by Disney and using that same name.

I think it's fair to say it's in the same spirit as the earlier titles; perhaps a bit more approachable, too, as it's a little more welcoming at the start. I have fond memories of Castle and, especially, World (two-player co-op platforming  ) but I can't recall Land (I need to check if I have it in my MS collection!).

Will have to pick this up next year when I'm allowed to buy games again!

I would give Land of Illusion a go. I think it's better than Castle on the SMS. I should play World of Illusion also!

I just consulted the Wikipedia entry for Illusion games and I hadn't realised that another title, Legend of Illusion, was released for the Game Gear in 1995. The entry lists Island as a "related game", presumably on the basis that it's a Disney platformer. With Illusion in the title I'd think it's more than just "related" but I guess that the entry is focused upon the original Sega titles.

Funny that you mention this, I played this one recently. It's not as good as the other ones. Had no idea it existed either.

There were some damn good Disney licensed games released in the 90's.

BIG NEWS - THERE'S BEEN A FREE UPDATE

So I hadn't touched this game since September as I'd 100%-ed it. But jawa inspired me to have a little play. It seems they've quietly dropped a very cool free update!

There's a bunch of timed obstacles courses (which you can fast travel to if you've completed it) scattered throughout the map. So if you fancy picking it up again just download the update.

It was a nice surprise - I've played a couple and they're now the coolest part of the game. :toot:

That sounds cool. I did the first run solo, but played a little with my GF last night. She's not a gamer (only game we finished together was blanc) but she liked this and as I was planning on another run anyway so we're going to try and do a complete run together starting on holiday. It was fun solo but definitely adds a layer to the enjoyment doing it in multi-player, doesn't it.

Yeah, as someone that usually prefers straight platformers to metroidvanias - I'd just say don't intimidated by the map. It is a very straight-forward metro-vania - you're always pushed along in the right direction (e.g. new power-up meaning you can now access something right in front of you) - enjoy the journey - you'll always be going in the right direction. So much so again it works as a multi-player and is still relaxing (I think most metrovanias would be frustrating in a 2 player with all the doubling back on yourself you usually have to do - but not in this game)

Great stuff - I played as Mickey or Donald most of the time but cycled through all the character and yes you can select your character at the start of each play time.

Just one thing, whilst the character all have their own unique cool animations and individual power-ups - THEY ALL PLAY EXACTLY THE SAME. This is a good thing! Think they had multi-player in mind so one person wouldn't be speeding ahead. They are jump the same and run as quick as each other - so you don't need to worry about picking a character based on abilities :D

This game https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_of_I ... ckey_Mouse Not quite.

It's from the same series. But most Illusion games play a little more like straight platformers. This is slightly more non-intimidating metroid-vania.

It's from the same series and they definitely share the same DNA- and if you loved Land (as I did) there's a very good chance you'll love Island. I went in expecting something more akin to a platformer in Land style - but ended up way happier with what we were given. So I would recommend

---------

Land the Master system game is great though isn't it? One of the few retro games that hold up if you didn't play the first time.

I would like to play all the Illusion games I can get my hands on - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Illusion_ ... ame_series) I've played Land, Castle (the modern remake) and Island - I'd really like to play World one day

Yes, when I first started up the game a message popped up about the update and you can see the details from the title screen by pressing "+". The obstacle courses sound neat!

I didn't quite get where to go at first (I couldn't find the wall jump item that I needed) but then I realised you just head towards the arrow on the map. It's pretty cool!

I guess that the characters are just different costumes, really, and that makes sense from a multiplayer aspect - but they do look smart. I will try a different character next time!

I did... I was Donald :toot: .

I'm very much enjoying the game so far; the easy-going, "simple Metroidvania" platforming action feels good.
