PostDisney to launch its own streaming services and end relationship with Netflix

FT wrote:Walt Disney will launch a standalone ESPN sports streaming subscription next year and a separate video service for its films in 2019, neither of which will require a pay-television subscription.

The Verge wrote:Disney will end its distribution deal with Netflix and launch its own streaming service, the company announced today. It intends to launch the service in 2019.

The Disney-branded streaming service will be the “exclusive home in the US for subscription-video-on-demand viewing,” and will kick off with films including Toy Story 4 and the sequel to Frozen. “Original movies, TV shows, [and] short-form content” will be added to the service, and it’ll be filled out with older movies from Disney and Pixar’s catalog and shows from Disney’s TV channels.

Good job there's no contracts any more as it looks like there's going to be a lot of jumping between providers every month, which has its positives and negatives. If you're a TV hog, all these streaming services will probably work out more expensive than Sky satellite. I don't know how long Sky has Disney locked in over here.

Wonder what that means for the Marvel shows and Miramax films...

Does this mean the Marvel Netflix series will be discontinued?

A bunch of the Netflix marvel shows just got renewed for additional seasons so I don't think those are ending anytime soon.

Everyone having their own streaming service is really bad for consumers though. You go from needing just one or two subscriptions to 5 or 6, all wanting the same money for less content.

Yeah, the future looked like it was going to be a couple of streaming services with a ridiculous amount of content. What it will actually be is loads of streaming services with content spread amongst them and the cost of getting them all will make Sky look cheap.

Never mind, it just looks like we will all have to go back to full time piracy.

Disney already have their own streaming service over here. It's called Disney Life and costs £4.99 a month. It includes pretty much every Disney movie and TV show ever made.

Yep totally agree there, this is going to end up pushing everyone back to piracy as it will be far cheaper and likely less hassle in the long run.

That's a good point. Even forgetting the cost, it will be a massive pain the arse flicking between 20 different streaming apps to try and find the thing you are looking for. Much easier to just download it from a file sharing site.

But, but, but, I thought competition was supposed to be good for consumers.

I'm a bit annoyed by this as my lad watching some of the Disney stuff on Netflix. It's not just the films, it's all the cartoon series that are on there. It's a lot of content. There's no way I'm subscribing to another service.

Pretty much this. I realise these companies want to maximise their profits and all of that but if every movie studio and TV company has their own service it makes piracy attractive again. People will pay when its cheap and easy, they wont when its easier to pirate stuff. Clearly companies have learned the wrong lesson from the success of Netflix.

Basically what you have to do is subscribe to one service for a month, cancel, and then sub to somebody else. And so on and so forth.
