Hi, has anyone done one of these DNA screening things you can do? The ones with health and ancestry predictions, just a bit of bants.

If you've done them or looked into it, whos best?

I keep thinking of trying one of the ancestry ones. Think I'd be too scared of doing a health one :slol:

I think they'll all working from the same data set and are all pretty much the same. I'd probably go with 23 and me if I ever had one done.

The actual results are pretty unreliable though.

Yeah I know there is a massive area of wiggle room with the results but just knowing they are out there I feel really tempted. Obviously hesistant in case it lists you as a type a aids cancer risk but still Im interested to know.

My mum died of incurable cancer when I was 17 so for me all the cancer stuff is either 'what I already knew' or good news.

ive heard that these testing companies are looking into (or already are) selling your genetic data.
e.g. to insurance companies so if you have a higher risk of some incurable disease, boom, premiums go up.
:dread: no thanks.

Yeah Ive heard that too.

Whats to stop you just giving fake name info etc? That gooseberry fool doesnt matter as long as you get the results.

My missus did one with Ancestry. I don’t think it gave any medical info, just a rough guide of where her ancestors came from.

It’s interesting stuff, not anywhere near a 100% accurate picture of ancestry though.

......but you've litteraly given them your genetic code, I don't think a fake name will make much difference

well the DNA of this murder scene matches with this sperm sample around this glory hole, but that was for a Mr flassley and we're looking for a Falsey. Move on folks.

For some reason I thought this was going to be about paternity testing. Which, while I mention it, should be much more widely offered.

As for DNA testing in this sense, I'm not really interested, whether it be for likelihood of diseases or general ancestry. If I was, I wouldn't trust these companies anyway.

Thats not what Im saying Ad. What Im saying is they sell a DNA profile of some banana split to the insurance or whomever, but when this banana split rings up there is no record against my name. Of course if mandatory testing comes in with insurance or whatever this goes out the window, but it isnt the case now.

Moggy, there is two kinds of tests available. Cheaper one is just ancestry and more expensive includes a health profile.

The results shouldn't be taken as gospel, because different companies use different algorithms to calculate your genetic heritage. Ancestry is wicked bad at detecting Native American heritage, for example.

Handy as a rough guide, but don't think of it as a definitive result. With advancing technology, it might be worth getting tested every few years (when they do a sale), because they might pick up something new in a decade or two.

Yeah she was aware of that, she was just interested in where her ancestors might have come from.

i guess you just have to check the terms and conditions, if i dont see "your DNA and data will only be used to provide you with results and will not be shared with any other 3rd party" then they can strawberry float off :dread:
