If your DNA's got nothing to hide then you shouldn't mind it being shared ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

I'm very selective about who I share my DNA with.

Well my Dad researched our Paternal family tree all the way back to the 1390s, so it seemed like our family are pretty long-lived and I have nothing to worry about. Or at least I think that's what it means.

If the ones from 1390 are still alive then your lot really are long-lived.

It means your ancestors were rich. Who squandered all the money?

Of course if mandatory testing comes in with insurance or whatever this goes out the window, but it isnt the case now.

Moggy, there is two kinds of tests available. Cheaper one is just ancestry and more expensive includes a health profile.

e.g. to insurance companies so if you have a higher risk of some incurable disease, boom, premiums go up.
:dread: no thanks.

This, plus its just another way of creating a national DNA database.
Given the new GPDR that has come in, selling on your data is not allowed unless you specifically sign something that will allow them to share your data.

I keep meaning to do the Ancestry one as I would find that interesting, my partner also wants to do it and he wants his twin sister to take it as well to see if it comes back the same

I did the 23andme ancestry and health a few years ago. No health risks for anything thankfully.

It didn't break down the difference between British and Irish but it now makes a best guess. I knew that my ancestry can be traced quite far back in Ireland due to the Catholic Church records (baptisms etc).

European
99.8%
British & Irish
97.4%
Ireland prediction
Scandinavian
0.4%
Sardinian
0.2%
Broadly Northwestern European
1.7%
Broadly European
0.1%
Unassigned
0.2%

Pretty fecking Irish!

It also said I have more Neadathal DNA than 89% of other members. :slol: And had the DNA variant found in many elite power athletes. :datass:

What would you do if it came back low risk for health issues but then you end up getting really poorly?

Nothing? Wouldn't sue them if that's what you're getting at?

It would just be bad luck.

I'm in pretty strawberry floating good shape and well insured for life cover and income protection insurance (£1400p/m) kicks in if unable to work for more than 4 weeks or more and if it was permanent, it would continue to pay to age 68. Fingers crossed the insurance turns out to be a waste of money, but no one can predict the future and I can't afford to be the unlucky soul with a career ending illness.

Even if it comes back high risk for a health issue its not a done deal. The genetic match is just saying you are in a high risk group, not that you are guaranteed to get it or immune.

I was at a seminar the other day led by a high-up geneticist for NHS Wales. She had a little rant about 23andme, and told a story of a patient who came in and swore she had homozygous BRCA1 mutations because the test told her so. But homozygous BRCA1 mutations are well-known to be incompatible with life: she would have been a miscarriage if her DNA were really set up that way. The moral of the story is that the quality control on these tests is not good, and the results often can't be further investigated by NHS doctors (as it would further strain their limited resources to confirm 23andme results for everyone who has it done).

Her advice was "if you're thinking about doing 23andme... please don't!". I guess I think if you're happy to treat it as a game and a bit of fun then it's fine. But someone who's going to be up at night worrying that they're going to get Alzheimer's any day now because the test told them so should give it a miss.
