Are there any other good alternative ways to get into a decent job?
I'm sure not all graduates would have gone through a graduate scheme. They seem to be too competitive. I think my plan now is to just go for an entry job somewhere and work my way up.

Currently I work at a supermarket and they have internal management training schemes so I may give that a go if i don't get something soon.

2.1 as well. Its was a 4 years undergraduate masters degree too (dunno if u heard of them? Usually people do the masters part separately with other degrees). I had the option to end it in 3 years but decided to stay an extra year as I was happy studying and thought a masters level might make me more employable in any sector :fp: I suppose it gives me a bit more to talk about in interviews.

Wow English lit 2.1 is impressive!! I am not so good at anything with a lot of reading/writing so always stuck to sciences and maths

Yeah, most engineering graduates from my course last year weren't taken onto graduate schemes, but they're all still employed. Are you on Monster? If you're not, get on there, and stuff like LinkedIn. Make sure you mention everything in the right places. On LinkedIn you can assign yourself "skills", that people searching for participants can find you by, so if you're fluent in any CAD stuff, make sure you stick that in there.

I've already had people contacting me after finding me on Monster, and I'm not graduating for another few months.

Yeah. My best friend did a Physics course like that. He's now bagged a job at BAE Detica, and is undergoing security clearance. It's a programming role, and his only knowledge of programming is a Java module he did in his first year, and nothing on again since.

It just seems unfair.

I'm graduating in BA Arts & Media this year, should be 2:1 or 1st but my employment prospects are basically the degree to which I'm prepared to get screwed into doing underpaid or free work, unless there's a slim chance I can find someone that has more than £30 to make a Website.

yeah but maybe that role requires a lot of problem solving and needs someone who has good skills in numbers and science. So it won't just be a single module that got him the job lol.
What kind of career are you looking for?

It sucks that the government just raised tuition fees from £3400 to £9000 a year. Otherwise I might have considered going back to university and doing MPharm or a Bsc Hons in Optometry.

If you can't find a good job related to your degree then you could always apply for other graduate schemes. There are loads in business and finance that just require a 2.1 degree in any subject. When I went for an accounting graduate role a girl there was doing a degree in classics lol. What matters most is your ability to answer competency questions and being a great communicator to be successful in tests such as role play, group meetings and all those other things they like to test graduates on.

I've got a job interview on Monday for an IT company. Do I need to wear a suit, or can I get away with just shirt and tie?

Suit. I always wear one, even if it's just entry level IT support or web site monkey. Then again i'm currently unemployed so maybe my strategy is not so good.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

Hell, I wore a suit to my job interview, and even now I still wear a casual shirt and smart trousers/shoes to work.

EDIT: Lol, Dblock said 'gimp'

What do you mean 'even now'? You can look sharp without wearing a suit. The only places you'd expect to see people looking like tramps in an office are probably free thinking hippy types or literal tramps who dont care about how they are perceived.

To start with it will be entry level helpdesk/1st level support with some on-site work, but they promise lots of training to quickly move up through the company, so it looks like a good opportunity. The company itself specialises in cloud computing.

I don't have a suit so i'll either have to borrow one from my brother (if it fits), or go into town tomorrow and pick up a cheap one. :shifty:

Fake edit: Just had a look on Burton and suits are much cheaper than I thought so I'll probably buy one tomorrow.

To be honest, its a bit murky. I dont see how it'd be a negative to wear a suit to the interview, though you could probably get away with smart pants, shirt and a cardi or something.

To be fair, I think past a certain point you're not going to get much better with "numbers and science", which becomes less about science and more about understanding as you go on. (Unless of course you're off for an internship at CERN, but you know...) If it's numbers and understanding people want, I'm a smart person, and I can offer that easily. It's just I don't have a Physics degree; I hold no interest in the subject.

My dream job is to be a media journalist, like a lot of people on this forum actually. They're few and far between to say the least, so at the moment I'm looking for jobs in media and communications, especially with publishing companies. Unfortunately a lot of businesses these days seem to think that communications = PR, which is another strawberry floating HR hurdle to prove that I can actually do a job well...

Just heard back from another job and they also want to interview me next week.
This one is an entry-level IT job for an airport, so again there should be good long-term prospects if I can get my foot in the door.

It also means the suit I buy will be worn at least twice.

I'd always advise the suit, call me old fashioned by always like to see it and silly farts like might be interviewing you (I ran an it dept for several years before stepping down due to me disability and changing direction)
