I was just making a "Stop! Obama Time!" thread.

The huge anti-climax begins today!

"The human and the fish can co-exist peacefully."

8 years of that has ended.

That's what most people are relieved about, I reckon.

I care, only on the day the Americans (particularly Oprah and the rest of the crying buffoons) realise that he cannot save their country and that he will just spend even MORE of the money they don't have than Bush.

The main thing he can change is the perception of America in the wider world, which from our perspective will be an incredible change.

I do find it ironic though that in the "land of the free" Obama will have practically no freedom.

I like Obama and think he will do a decent job. People are going to end up disappointed though as he will never be able to live up to the hype. He is also taking power at one of the worst possible times (economic meltdown plus Iraq and Afghanistan), although he will be remembered as a great leader if he can fix some of the problems.

His colour doesn’t matter and it seems to me its only other people that have made an issue of it (either as a negative or positive). I don’t remember hearing Obama using his colour in any of the campaigning.

But no I doubt I will be watching the inauguration as I am at work for most the day. I am sure I will see the highlights all over the news tonight though!

Tokenism. So liberals can pat themselves on the back and say how far they've come, whilst the gap between rich and poor widens.

Right on brother! Fight the power!

EDIT: *thinks* Although a token black president is far better than a braindead puppet of warmongers.

True.

But I honestly don't think anything will change.

Will America take an objective look at the situation in Palestine?
No
Will the new president address the widening gulf between the have and have nots in the US? Don't think so
Will he be photographed by countless celebrities all desperate to show how 'hip' they are?
You betcha ass.

He has run a smooth, adept campaign but he now has to start delivering. The weight of expectation will start to take its toll sooner rather than later. I actually think his whole presidency will be a massive anti climax with him unable to meet the demands people are going to make.

It is all very similiar to when New labour got in. Tony blair arrived at downing street like a conquering emperor and then presided over ten years of spin and shite when all his smiles, articulate language and promises were shown to be false and empty. For once america have followed our lead!

I wish obama luck and Im delighted that the usa has been able to make such progress that they could elect a black president but once the euphoria dies down it will just be another smooth talking, media friendly bloke who cannot possibly make good on his numerous, varied, sound bite promises.

I'm less cynical, it is a very important change for American politics - or at least, it could become so. Obama is a very, very different man to every president that Americans have elected since ... well, since JFK and that isn't a reference to his ethnicity.

Obviously many people have either hyped it up, or think that excitement and hype that doesn't result in earth shattering changes is a failure, but some important changes where we can see a result are in healthcare, international reputation and science funding (this last one more for my interest). So far he has pledged to enact a healthcare reform bill before the end of his first term, everyone in the world think he's better than Bush and he has some of the world's leading scientists as part of his government promising to undo the damage that Bush did. So it is an excellent start.

The Economic downturn is partly a failure of Bush's leadership, but economies do do this unfortunately. However, this is the first downturn when the world is closer to a complete global economy than ever before, so it's hard to see what is going to happen.

Far from it, he's the first intelligent leader of the western world for a long time. And I really mean a long time. We've been stuck with idiots for decades now.

I'm watching just so I can say I watched it, more or less. A couple of decades from now I'll be able to make young people feel excluded by talking about it, just like when people older than me talk about the moonlanding the Berlin wall.
