Thought this thread should get a bump, especially if we want some more members!

So I'll take the plunge and put up my soundcloud for perusal. I do a lot of acoustic, singer-songwritery stuff. I also do some production stuff. It's not very sorted, but I thought it would be nice to get some more stuff posted in this thread to show everyone that GRcade is more than just Games!

https://soundcloud.com/stugene

Here's a selection of things, my own, some covers and some stuff I did some Production for:

Our current interface doesn't seem to allow for the full display of a playlist, but click the link and it should take you to it!

Naturally, we need some games related things, so here's some covers of The Bon Odori from Rhythm Tengoku (Rhythm Heaven) that I did:

Original drumming, instrumental, with slowing and speeding up for effect

In the style of a 70's blues guitarist:

Recorded a practice session a while back of a live act I'm working on (essentially a DJ set with live drums) -

All the remixes have been done by me. The drumming isn't my most interesting work, had a deadline to get the video online by so didn't want to throw in too many big fills in case I didn't nail it. Pretty decent indication of how it's going to shape up live, really looking forward to getting more videos up and starting my shows.

Annoyingly the syncing goes a bit shitty at the end. Using my mobile to film it seems to have been slightly unreliable!

I like this one. I'm a fan of the natural ebb and flow of it.

Man I love that snare roll/fill at 0:15, 0:29 and 0:43, just listened to it so many times, and that ending is immense...makes me glad to have ears.

Cheers dude! Took me quite a few takes to get them to sound that smooth with what little practice I had haha!

Did anyone know that I've really got into making music over the past couple of years thanks to my iPad? Well, I have. Although, so far it's been more like noodling around and working stuff out. Thanks to divorce leaving me in charge of my own money again, though, in the past year I've bagged myself a Chapman ML-1 guitar (I'm a massively lapsed classical guitarist and have always wanted to play electric), an Elektron Analog RYTM and an Elektron Analog Keys.

Synths are strawberry floating fantastic things, eh? And music is awesome. Eventually I'll have something to show you guys. Glad to see this thread back in business.

Cheers. I really dislike "correcting" timing errors in recordings like this, so I deliberately leave in slightly shoddy timing as I'm using to a live band jamming feel. I think it works well for background/sountrack kind of stuff, and I personally really dislike the overproduced direction some bands have gone in, like Muse. So I just rattle these things off and keep in all the dodgy timing, usually because I can't hear gooseberry fool on headphones and I never use a click track!

Also a lot of minimalism/jazz/theme and variations/riff type methodology.

Not gonna lie, I'm usually a bit of a sucker for metronomical drumming on record but I'm becoming more open to the human groove side of it as time goes on. The most recent EP I'm working on with my band hasn't been corrected much, if at all, and I'm really liking the feel of it. Usually I'm just like "yeah, so quantize it all, fix that, nudge this" but this one's got a much more intimate, raw feel to it.

Obviously in a live space, the human element of it is one of the things that makes it better than just sticking on a CD. I don't mind my band edging at that direction whilst I push towards beat-perfect computer-like drumming for my electronic projects. I can't really imagine us dropping click tracks for our live band performances though. I've played to a click for about 8 out of my 10 years of drumming and I feel very at home with it.

Hah, the drummer is the click and the groove and the bassist here! But yeah, it must be difficult to move out of.

I really prefer the groove, obviously an improvised groove is impossible with a click, so inherently, I can't do that, as most of my/our music is born out of rhythmic/polyphonic improv.

Such as recently

My drums via ableton/akai though.

Some kind of mashup of 60s organ music with a square wave dupstep oscillator and Sega Virtua Racing / Hotline Miami.

Got a Yamaha BB424 and a Laney bass amp at the end of last week. I ultimately want to learn fingerstyle but at the moment, I'm struggling with unwanted string noise. The muting technique on this thing is going to take a while to get used to.

Bump!

Got a bit of a bonus at work, so I'm thinking about picking up a synth. I'm pretty clueless when it comes to electronic music, though. Can you get any synths that have the drum-machine style pads built in, or is that going to be a little too expensive to start off with?

I've been looking at the Novation Minonova because it seems like it's got a pretty decent sound plus a vocoder, but I haven't really looked that deeply yet:

Anyone got any recommendations?

I was looking at that Synth recently as well. Seems cheap, but versatile enough to get some nice sounds out of. You can alter the sounds further on your desktop as well.

The Roland jdxi looks like a pretty cool device as well, but it's a bit more expensive than the Mininova.

I think you if want pads and other control surfaces you should get a midi controller and use soft synths on a budget.

Holy strawberry float, got my Schecter guitar repaired and new pickups input. Sounds amazing from initial impressions. Cheap pickups as well, got the set for 50 quid. Irongear pickups, Hot Slag in the bridge, rolling mill in the neck. Coil tapped sounds as close to a strat as a humbucker guitar could sound. I am looking forward to getting used to these.

I was impressed with the amount of money it cost to fix as well as put the pickups in.

Got a cheap strat copy two months ago. Pickups are rubbish and it needs a setup bad. The neck is bizarrely round, I like my guitars with some relief on them. I'm going to be swapping the pickups out of it when I get access to a soldering iron. Have the pickups bought and all.

Has anyone ever done anything like this? Some advice on what to watch out for would be great, seems fairly simple to do.

Don't use a gooseberry fool soldering iron and buy lead solder on ebay. Heat both ends of the things for about 5-10 seconds before feeding the solder into the joint with 1 hand while applying heat with the solder tip in the other.

Make sure the solder tip has a thin layer of solder on it and isn't black. Use a chisel tip or it won't work.

http://cachefly.oreilly.com/make/wp_soldering_small.mp4

You might be able to buy a replacement neck but it'll need setting up again, or at least a truss rod adjustment.

I like Pacifica as a cheap strat. I don't like squires.
